Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

This article introduces literacy from a few “big picture” perspectives, and then reviews five paradigms that have shaped the teaching and learning of literacy in residential confinement institutions for juveniles and adults. The paradigms are specific to correctional education, but they will be familiar to all alternative teachers and advocates of literacy instruction.

Most alternative and correctional educators have not had systematic access to relevant knowledge of their field, its history and literature, or parallel programs in other jurisdictions. As a result, they tend to accept whatever strategies happen to be current at their site. This project was done by a special education teacher of the severely handicapped. The goal of this project is to promote a teaching strategy called Social Stories which combine the written word with various scenarios for the autistic individual. Preliminary findings of teachers who are using Social Stories show great promise for some autistic individuals who function at a variety of levels. Unfortunately, Social Stories seems to be neglected as a teaching strategy and what can be done to change so that more teachers are aware of it and using it?

The purpose of this qualitative study is to gain insight into the needs of children with ADHD from the perspective of teachers. Interviews were conducted either face-to-face or by telephone with teacher participants provided by Sylvan Learning Center and through snowball sampling. Findings of this study are expected to give social workers an opportunity to work collaboratively with teachers, parents and mental health professionals in applying a multimodal approach toward developing effective treatment strategies for children with ADHD.

The project contributes to the significance of special education by providing information on how to identify early signs of autism in order to implement appropriate strategies as early as possible and by examining the effectiveness of early intervention programs. The Effects Of Music On Communication And Behavior In Children With Autism, Cheryl Ann Nicolosi

The research demonstrates that music therapy is an effective tool in the area of communication and behavior with children with autism and children with other learning disabilities. The hypothesis of this thesis predicted that music would enhance communication and decrease inappropriate behaviors. Qualitative data were gathered from interviews with music therapists and observations of students diagnosed with autism and other disabilities including attention deficit disorder, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, and other levels of mental retardation. Results supported the hypothesis and also supported the research in the literature that music lowered the anxiety levels in all individuals, resulting in increased learning.
