What impact does collaboration between faculty and professional course designers have on the student learning experience? As the use of technologies increases, educational institutions have to find ways of identifying and addressing expectations about how technologies can best be incorporated into the teaching and learning experiences. This paper reports on efforts at Washington State University to develop and assess the course design and faculty development process and the impact the process has on student learning experiences. An Investigation Of The Impact Of Integrated Learning System Use On Mathematics Achievement Of Elementary Students., Vicki Carpenter Kirk

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between time spent on an integrated learning system (ILS) entitled, SuccessMaker®, as a supplement to traditional mathematics instruction on achievement as measured by standardized achievement tests of elementary students. The variables of grade-level, ability level, and gender were also considered. The population consisted of students who were second-, third-, and fourth-graders during the 1997-98 school year. Data were gathered that covered the three-year period beginning in 1997 and ending in 2000. Students learn and retain more when they enjoy the process or avenue of learning. Students have fun learning to spell when visual, auditory, and hands-on learning are included in the process. In addition, the intervention project can be used to support and assist second language learners. The benefits from this intervention project will not only strengthen students' phonemic and spelling foundation, but will also enhance their reading comprehension and writing effectiveness.

Explored student and parent attitudes toward school-based Internet use using an intergenerational approach that positioned 54 pairs of young adolescents and their parents as co-learners for simultaneous Internet instruction while another 51pairs were given separate Internet instruction. Highlights include reliability measures, factor analysis, analysis of variance, and interview analyses.

This project shows how web tools can be effectively integrated into the community college composition curriculum through staff development. It shows the need for adaptation of materials designed for K-12 education to the community college level and the development of grade-appropriate materials using web resources. The need for authentic assessment is explored and the means to prove it were supplied. Examples of web tools, sites for developing web tools and resources for accessing and applying authentic assessment tools were given.
