Towards A Role-Based Metadata Scheme For Educational Digital Libraries: A Case Study In Singapore, Dian Melati Md Ismail, Ming Yin, Yin-Leng Theng, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee Peng Lim

In this paper, we describe the development of an appropriate metadata scheme for GeogDL, a Web-based digital library application containing past-year examination resources for students taking a Singapore national examination in geography. The new metadata scheme was developed from established metadata schemes on education and e-learning. Initial evaluation showed that a role-based approach would be more viable, adapting to the different roles of teachers/educators and librarians contributing geography resources to GeogDL. The paper concludes with concrete implementation of the role-based metadata schema for GeogDL.

Corporate Social Responsibility Reputation Effects On Mba Job Choice, David B. Montgomery, Catherine A. Ramus

In a preliminary study with 279 MBA’s from two European and three North American business schools we find that reputation-related attributes of caring about employees, environmental sustainability, community/ stakeholder relations, and ethical products and services are important in job choice decisions. We use an adaptive conjoint analysis survey tool to discover the relative weighting of a new set of social responsibility job search criteria, including these attributes with traditional job search criteria like financial package, geographical location, etc. In addition, our results show that more than ninety percent of the MBAs in the sample were willing to forgo financial benefits …

An important role of education – and the resultant accumulation of human capital – for a less-developed economy is to facilitate technology diffusion in order for it to catch up with developed economies. This paper presents a model linking education, the accumulation of physical capital and technological progress. In the model, investment in education and the accumulation of physical capital are complementary, and intertwine with the technology progress through related effects on technology diffusion and the expansion of the technology frontier. These are challenging times for most universities, particularly public universities in developing countries. Budget constraints have compelled many to cut costs and programs. At the same time, changing expectations have thrust upon them new functions and roles. In East Asia, for example, public universities are expected to become more research oriented and link up with industry to enhance national economic competitiveness. To do so effectively, it is assumed they must aspire to “world-class” status and transform themselves into institutions that can compare favorably with the best in the West.
