If professional development is understood to be teachers’professional learning, then authentic professional development occurs when we actively learn—and reflect on that learning, both individually and collaboratively—as we teach. What might characterize authentic learning for teachers—especially as it applies to using Internet tools and resources in the classroom? A series of research studies we have been doing provides some interesting insights into and potential answers to this question.

The purpose of this study was to compare the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) 2000 Standards for Elementary Preparation and the Virginia Licensure Regulations for Elementary Personnel (1998) with the perceptions of principals and teachers in the elementary schools in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The methodology incorporated an exploratory design using qualitative data collection and analyses of surveys of school-based personnel, as well as the NCATE standards and Virginia Licensure Regulations. Specifically, themes were identified through a series of reductions of the terms and phrases contained within the documents and surveys.;The results of this study identified similarities …

An Investigation Of The National Staff Development Council's Standards Of Staff Development, Wendy Clark Krickovic

The major purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teaching practice, student achievement, and the degree to which professional development in low-achieving elementary schools in one suburban Virginia district met the National Staff Development Council (NSDC) standards. Research methods included a self-assessment survey developed by NSDC, teacher interviews, and analyses of student achievement scores using the Virginia Standards of Learning assessments. According to survey results, participating teachers agreed that the NSDC standards were reflected in professional development activities. The standards of Equity and Quality Teaching were reported to be implemented to the greatest degree in professional development …

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student achievement and home socialization. Specifically, it explored the influence of cognitive and academic home socialization variables on the achievement of seventh- and twelfth-grade students. It further explored the influence of cognitive and academic subvariables on student achievement. The cognitive home socialization subvariables were stimulating literacy environment and joint learning activities. American higher education is moving into a new phase in which environmental challenges are likely to intensify, threatening the survival of some institutions. Small private colleges, especially those that are reliant on enrollments and the tuition revenue that enrollments generate, are especially vulnerable to environmental challenges. This puts them at a competitive disadvantage with stronger private institutions and state-supported institutions. This study examined the relationship between a college and its local government organizations in a community that engaged in property tax or voluntary contribution deliberations with nonprofit organizations to determine the extent to which these interactions altered the preceding town-gown relationship. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, substance abuse professionals are debating the licensure requirements for substance abuse counselors. The debate concerns the minimum educational and experience requirements for substance abuse counselor licensure (i.e., lowering the educational requirements to include individuals with less than a master's degree). In most counseling related helping professions, the minimum educational requirement for a counselor is a master's degree in a counseling related field. to obtain a state or national license, 4,000 hours of supervised experience and the passing of a licensure examination is required beyond a master's degree. Traditional methods for the evaluation of teachers appear to have limited applicability for the majority of elementary and secondary school educators engaged in the field of performing arts, due primarily to the specialized nature of their respective teaching disciplines. The purpose of this research was to determine if there was a relationship between collective teacher efficacy and student achievement and if collective teacher efficacy made an independent contribution in explaining student achievement beyond socioeconomic status. The conceptual basis for this study was Bandura's theory of self-efficacy.;Relationships between collective teacher efficacy and student achievement on the Virginia grade 8 math, writing, and English Standards of Learning (SOL) tests were found to be significant. The relationship between collective teacher efficacy and student achievement on the grade 8 writing SOL test made an independent contribution when controlling for socioeconomic status. Principals are accountable for juggling multiple competing tasks daily. This study explored the degrees of emphasis placed upon leadership and management behaviors of school principals in Virginia by determining the congruence of job descriptions and evaluation instruments with state and professional standards. State expectations were communicated to varying degrees by responding school divisions in both job descriptions and evaluation instruments. School divisions universally expected principals to focus upon instruction and parent and staff communication, while other state responsibilities received less attention.
