Suggested Activities For Using The Newspaper In The Esl Classroom, Carol Gordenstein
Suggested Activities For Using The Newspaper In The Esl Classroom, Carol Gordenstein
MA TESOL Collection
The following project is designed to help teachers introduce the newspaper into the ESL classroom by means of specific activities which have relevance in language teaching. These activities contain both linguistic and cultural content, and can be implemented for various levels. The collection of ideas is grouped according to particular news articles, with a brief description of each type of feature, an example of the feature, and a list of specific and sometimes more general activities related to the feature. This project can be used as a supplement to regular language teaching procedures, and it is hoped that it will …
A Series Of Dialogues For Foreign Students Who Have Just Arrived In The United States, Stephen B. Gelman
A Series Of Dialogues For Foreign Students Who Have Just Arrived In The United States, Stephen B. Gelman
MA TESOL Collection
From my experience with beginning or intermediate students who have just arrived in the States, I have found that they lack confidence in dealing with real situations outside the ESL classroom and in interacting with Americans because of their inability to speak or understand normal spoken English. They need some preparation and encouragement to ease the cultural shock they will encounter.
In this project, I have used a series of dialogues to prepare the students for the most common situations they will experience almost immediately, such as opening a checking account or eating in a restaurant. Another purpose of these …
Tres Cuentos, Beatriz Cespedes De Fantini
Tres Cuentos, Beatriz Cespedes De Fantini
MA TESOL Collection
Teachers of Spanish are often concerned primarily with the mechanical aspects of language. A student's knowledge of the language is principally determined by his mastery of vocabulary, correct verb forms, etc. By devoting so much concern to the purely linguistic aspects of communication, other important dimensions have often been ignored; for example, the "appropriateness" of language use in a given social context. Once this dimension is considered, it becomes clear that besides knowledge of the mechanical construct of language, the student must also acquire knowledge of what language choices are appropriate for each social situation.
In this work, three original …
The Importance Of Cross-Cultural Training For The Tesol Teacher, Susan Ginsberg Emanuel
The Importance Of Cross-Cultural Training For The Tesol Teacher, Susan Ginsberg Emanuel
MA TESOL Collection
Preparation of teachers of ESOL only began some thirty years ago, but with the increased need for better qualified and trained teachers, it is necessary to examine the factors that will best allow the teacher to function overseas. Much research has gone into language acquisition and the effects of motivation on the learner. Culture shock and culture stress seem to be obvious areas of concern, yet very little real research has concentrated on this area. Examination of TESOL courses shows a tremendous lack in cultural awareness courses directed at coping with culture shock and stress. Further research needs to be …

The additional problem of being a western woman in a Moslem culture is also described.
Using Music To Teach English As A Second Language: A Guide To The Use Of Song Lyrics, Peter M. Carney
Using Music To Teach English As A Second Language: A Guide To The Use Of Song Lyrics, Peter M. Carney
MA TESOL Collection
This project consists of two parts: the first is a "guide", which lists seven distinct subject areas that can be taught or reinforced through the use of song lyrics. These seven areas are: Grammar/Structure; Conversation; Vocabulary; Idioms, Colloquial Expressions, and Two-word verbs; Figures of Speech ( Metaphors, Similes, Personification, Allusion ); Writing; and Aural/Oral skills. The reason I refer to this as a "guide" is because it presents samples of different types of songs within each category, and suggests ways to use them.
The second part consists of thirty songs, each one of which refers back to at least one …
The Importance Of Including In An Esl Program: A Study Of Intonation Patterns Used In Everyday Spoken English And Some Suggestions For Working With Intonation In The Classroom, A. Rebecca Cardozo
The Importance Of Including In An Esl Program: A Study Of Intonation Patterns Used In Everyday Spoken English And Some Suggestions For Working With Intonation In The Classroom, A. Rebecca Cardozo
MA TESOL Collection
Native speakers of English rely on more than just words and grammatical structures to communicate their feelings, attitudes and intentions. In fact, it is often not the words and the grammar that convey the speaker's message. Rather, it is the speaker's intonation pattern, body language and voice volume that get the message across. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate the importance of including in the ESL classroom a study of intonation patterns used in everyday spoken English. It is also the purpose of this paper to suggest materials and methods which could be used in the classroom …

The Use Of The American Heritage New Illustrated History Of The United States In An Advanced Esl Class, Karen L. Yablonski-Toll
The Use Of The American Heritage New Illustrated History Of The United States In An Advanced Esl Class, Karen L. Yablonski-Toll
MA TESOL Collection
This report describes the American Heritage New Illustrated History of the United States, which is a sixteen-volume set of chronologically ordered books. It also presents student-teacher objectives devised for its use following a one-semester course in which it was used at the secondary level. In formulating the objectives, I attempted to devise a course very much like a regular secondary or college-level American History course in which ESL students would have an opportunity to experience something more than a superficial or cursory exposure to that history. In evaluating its use, I attempted to identify what part the books and their …

A Handbook Of Operations For Use In The Esl, Thomas Andrew Winters, Gayle Laverne Nelson
A Handbook Of Operations For Use In The Esl, Thomas Andrew Winters, Gayle Laverne Nelson
MA TESOL Collection
This handbook contains 50 operations for use in the ESL classroom. An operation describes a process or procedure for doing something, such as opening a bank accountant or using a cassette recorder. The meaning of the language is made clear by the action, and the action reinforces the language. Operations are especially useful for teaching and practicing verb tenses, although they can also be used when working with stress and intonation patterns, vocabulary building, locative phrases, cultural information, and skill development. Operations are activity-oriented, and because the students are physically responding to words, the language has concrete meaning. The handbook …

National Michigan Test Score Improvement Averages For The International Students Of English At The School For International Training Of Ten Programs From January 1974 Through June 1976, Robert J. Thomas
MA TESOL Collection
This project contains student data, consisting of nationality, test scores, and age, from ten programs of International Students of English at the School for International Training. The data has been calculated to produce national test score averages which are helpful when comparing the various national and language group abilities of performance on the Michigan Test. In general this material supports the hypothesis that the closer a student's native language is to English linguistically the greater his score improvement will be on the Michigan Test.

Proposal For "An Introduction To Adult Literacy" As An Elective Course In The Mat Program, Ruth Ellen Passo
Proposal For "An Introduction To Adult Literacy" As An Elective Course In The Mat Program, Ruth Ellen Passo
MA TESOL Collection
Few ESL teacher programs in the United States offer such compatibility highly trained humanistic instructors than the MAT program at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Nonetheless, most of the studies at this institution are geared to teaching in a private language academy abroad or in the United States. Yet, a real need for competent ESL teachers exists in our country within the public domain. The recent emergence and evolving role of the bilingual/bicultural education major at SIT addresses itself to this area, mainly from the standpoint of elementary education and child language acquisition and development. By the …

Tooning Into English ( A Rationale For The Use Of Cartoons In The English Language Classroom Plus Cartoons And Lesson Plans ), Timothy James Maciel
MA TESOL Collection
Teachers of English are constantly seeking new and better materials to aid their students in learning the English language. Sometimes these materials are in the form of newspaper or magazine articles and advertisements to show how a grammatical pattern studied in the textbook is actually applied in the culture. Sometimes these materials are in the form of cultural artifacts such as clothing items or eating utensils. And very often these materials are in the form of pictures and photographs to give the student a visual representation of new words or grammatical patterns. Whatever the material, the teacher is constantly looking …
