The purpose of this study is to find a test or combination of tests in the areas of intelligence, clerical ability, and personality that could, for prognostic purposes, be relied upon as a tool to aid in a counseling situation for students desiring to enroll in shorthand I, typewriting I, or office machines. Three well-known, standardized tests were used in the investigation. Juniors and Seniors of the Labette County Community High School at Altamont, Kansas enrolled in the subjects mentioned made up the experimental group. The purpose of this study is to determine the predictive value of longhand penmanship for success in Gregg Shorthand writing. The longhand tests consisted of copying the first four sentences of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address; the shorthand specimens were obtained from copying the entire Address. The rating scale selected for classifying longhand samples was the Ayres Handwriting Scale by Leonard P. Ayres, while the shorthand specimens were rated by Hoke’s Shorthand Penmanship Scale. The library-study hall in the secondary school has long been the subject of controversy, involving both the teaching and library professions. In general, educators have argued in favor of the combination, while librarians have maintained that the library should remain separate from the study hall. The combining of the library and the study hall was undertaken by administrators to eliminate the undesirable features of the study hall.
