The literature reviewed includes the challenges of traditional grading and its effect on students, standards-based grading reform, and the challenges associated with successful standards-based grading reform. Data for this qualitative study was collected through semi-structured interviews with eight participants who had experience as middle school teachers using a traditional …
Grading To Better Communicate Student Learning, Derek M. Carlisle
Grading To Better Communicate Student Learning, Derek M. Carlisle
Culminating Experience Projects
While the inadequacies of traditional grading have been well documented, it is still the most prominent grading system in schools today, including Kent City Community Schools. This project analyzes research on traditional and non-traditional grading systems to determine how to best assess and communicate student learning. Research confirms that, while traditional grading does have some benefits, the negative effects far outweigh the positive. And while there are a few other grading systems of merit, standards-based grading is the most commonly implemented and best meets the project goals of accurately assessing and communicating student learning and growth. The teacher in-service designed …

The paper examines how practices in schools and districts could be aligned with research and then explores implications for future research and transformed practice.
Standards-Based Grading At The Secondary Level: A Phenomenological Study Of District Level Administrators And Their Perceptions Of Transitioning From A Traditional Grading System, Timothy D. Mccarthy
Standards-Based Grading At The Secondary Level: A Phenomenological Study Of District Level Administrators And Their Perceptions Of Transitioning From A Traditional Grading System, Timothy D. Mccarthy
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional grading practices have been in place for well over a hundred years and grades received served to identify in which subjects a student is “smart” or in which ones they are not (Dewitt, 2017). The problem with traditional grading is that it does not provide qualitative information on the difference between an A, B, C, D, or F (Scriffiny, 2008). Standards-based grading allows the communication of where a student is in relation to well-defined standards. The problem is that many schools do not implement a standards-based grading and reporting system at the secondary level. This is in light of …

Dissertations of Practice
With a growing conversation around best practices in assessment, there are teachers out there seeking to make a shift to standards-based grading despite the fact that they work in a school system that uses traditional grading systems. This dissertation explores the differences between traditional grading and standard-based grading, the supports teachers need to make a shift to standards-based grading, and the effectiveness of an asynchronous professional development course on teachers’ knowledge base around and implementation of standards-based grading. The professional development course that is the research context for this study is shown to impact participants’ knowledge of standards-based grading as …
Teacher Perceptions Of Grades And Grading In A Pandemic, Michael V. Anderson
Teacher Perceptions Of Grades And Grading In A Pandemic, Michael V. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
A grade serves as the primary means of reporting feedback to teachers, students, and parents about the student's level of learning (Heflebower et al., 2014). Many schools have attempted to have teachers adopt standards-based grading, yet school leaders do not know teachers' perceptions about grades and grading. This quantitative study examines the perceptions of 1271 secondary teachers in one school district regarding grades and grading and how they may have changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collected from a survey reveals how changes in teacher perceptions about grades and grading may yield an opportunity for further standards-based …

The Effects Of Standards-Based Grading On Stakeholders Understanding Of Student Mastery In Middle School Math, Lynn Cady
Masters of Arts in Education Action Research Papers
Standards-based grading reports on student’s mastery of standards. Grading in this way allows students multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery of a standard; whereas, traditional grading practices assign grades to assessments and generally that grade cannot be changed even if the student later shows mastery of that set of skills. This action research study examines the effectiveness of standards-based grading and traditional grading practices in providing understanding of student mastery to students and teachers. In addition, the research addresses how well students can identify learning targets during each grading system.
To examine the effectiveness of each grading practice, the study included …

Case Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Their Current Grading Practices, Shavondra Danyelle Parker
Education Dissertations and Projects
Traditional grading represents typical grading practices including the traditional way grades have been calculated since the conception of grades. Before traditional grading, there was a time when mastery of content was not measured by grades at all. In recent years, educators have begun to explore other methods of grading in search of better ways to determine student mastery of content. Many educators use standards-based grading methods that focus instruction and grading around the standards students are expected to learn. Although many researchers support the use of standards-based grading, it has not replaced traditional grading methods. Grading practices should yield accurate …

A Standards-Based Grading Model To Predict Students' Success In A First-Year Engineering Course, Farshid Marbouti
A Standards-Based Grading Model To Predict Students' Success In A First-Year Engineering Course, Farshid Marbouti
Open Access Dissertations
Using predictive modeling methods, it is possible to identify at-risk students early in the semester and inform both the instructors and the students. While some universities have started to use standards-based grading, which has educational advantages over common score-based grading, at–risk prediction models have not been adapted to reap the benefits of standards-based grading. In this study, seven prediction models were compared to identify at-risk students in a course that used standards-based grading. When identifying at-risk students, it is important to minimize false negative (i.e., type II) errors while not increasing false positive (i.e., type I) errors significantly. To increase …

The Nature Of Feedback Provided To Elementary Students In Classrooms Where Grading And Reporting Are Standards-Based, Dawn Hopkins Souter
Educational Policy Studies Dissertations
THE NATURE OF FEEDBACK PROVIDED TO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS BY TEACHERS IN SCHOOLS WHERE GRADING AND REPORTING ARE STANDARDS-BASED Feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement. Hattie (2002) found that the giving of quality feedback to students is one of the top five strategies teachers can use to improve student achievement. Research has confirmed that the right kind of feedback is essential for effective teaching and learning (McMillan, 2007). The University of Queensland (Australia) notes that feedback is the entity that brings assessment into the learning process (1998). The evidence also shows, however, that how feedback …
