Teachers' Perspectives Of The Use Of A School-Wide Reading Program With Secondary Remedial Reading Students, Mary {Parker Jan 2020

Teachers' Perspectives Of The Use Of A School-Wide Reading Program With Secondary Remedial Reading Students, Mary {Parker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem of low reading scores on standardized tests prompted the implementation of a supplemental reading program to support students in a high school in a Southwestern state. It was unknown how effectively teachers were implementing that program. Reading is essential to all students; they must be able to read the content in their core subjects, state-mandated exams, and the end of course exams. In addressing the achievement gap for at-risk students, the district adopted a supplemental program, Achieve3000, for the remedial reading classes. The purpose of this study was to explore teachers perspectives of and experiences with the use …

An Evaluation Of A Remedial Reading Program For Middle-Grade Students In A Southeastern State Public School, Susan S. Nichols

Education Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects on reading achievement for middle school students after participation in a remedial reading program, Xtreme Reading, at a southeastern state public school. The researcher used Stufflebeam's (2003) context, input, process, and product (CIPP) model to guide the study. A mixed-method research design was used to examine data collected from 80 students in Grades 6 through 8 participating in reading interventions spanning a 1-year period from 2013 through 2014.

There were significant differences in reading achievement scores of students during the 1-year implementation of Xtreme Reading. The findings in this study …

An Evaluation Of The Reading Recovery Program At Main Street School In Shelbyville, Illinois, Leslie L. Hohenstein

Masters Theses

Traditional solutions to reading problems have not adequately addressed reading difficulties. Many students in the lower 20% of the reading level of their class have far reaching academic and social problems that lead to dropping out of school, entering special education classes, becoming frustrated, and possibly becoming discipline problems. This study examined the Reading Recovery Program at Main Street School in Shelbyville, Illinois. Specific study objectives were measurements of student test data and progress for the 1992-1993 school year. Measurements were performed using a pre- and post-testing method. A survey questionnaire was used to gather data from Reading Recovery teachers. …

Non-Book Motivation, Wanda Faye Williams Apr 1971

Non-Book Motivation, Wanda Faye Williams

Honors Theses

A practice teacher who is suddenly confronted with a senior class of remedial English literature must acknowledge the fact that the approach to literature for these students is through non-book materials. Perhaps the term remedial should be qualified in this instance to define students who have average or almost average intelligence but who have reading difficulties which have been enhanced by fear of books.

Remedial Reading: Evaluation Of A Reading-And-Study Course With Implications For A College Reading Center, Antoine T. Powell May 1968

Remedial Reading: Evaluation Of A Reading-And-Study Course With Implications For A College Reading Center, Antoine T. Powell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the method of teaching a "How to Study" class in helping students more adequately meet their reading needs.

Research was conducted to test the reading gains made by students in the program with respect to ability and group size. The results indicate that group size had the greatest effect as to changes in reading behavior.

Instruction was based on diagnosing student needs. It was shown that a significant number of students who decreased in rate of reading, increased in comprehension. The same diagnostic principle was observed for those …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Eight Remedial Reading Students In The Sevier District Schools, Doris P. Tuft

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Authorities have variously estimated the number of children with a reading disability to be between ten and fifteen percent of the total school population.1,2,3 Formerly, many children who had reading difficulties perhaps left school at an early age. Also, many children who might have had reading problems perhaps remained undetected before widespread group testing was initiated. Today, with the high premium placed upon high school and even college achievement, an education is, so to speak, a prerequisite to adult success. With reading unique in its being both a subject area and a tool necessary for the mastery of other …
