Reading Comprehension Strategies For Students With Autism: A Guide And Social Skills Unit Plan, Sarah Gostenik Cass

This project was initiated in order to help general and special education teachers in elementary classrooms with successful strategies, to assess and teach students with autism how to better comprehend text. The unit developed does two things: one, it educates teachers and students on a number of strategies to use in reading comprehension, and two, it helps students with autism gain important social skills. Each lesson is designed to incorporate Colorado Content Reading and Writing Standards, with aligned Social and Access skills.

An Investigation Of Relationships Between Oral Reading Rate And Reading Comprehension, Karen F. Rimkus

Quantitative research methods were used including observations and tallies of reading rates, data compilation, generation of scatterplots, and descriptive statistical analysis of the results. The research focused on observations of 69 fourth graders from two fourth grade classes in a private parochial elementary school in Las Vegas, Nevada. The students each read a 198-word passage to measure oral reading rate. A positive relationship between oral reading rate and reading comprehension was then determined. As a result, teachers may be able to use an oral reading rate test to design curriculum before the Terra Nova achievement test is administered in September. …

The increasing number of English language learners in mainstream classrooms continues to be one of the greatest challenges for educators. English language learners not only must learn the literacy skills necessary to be successful in American society, but they must also learn social and cultural skills. Literature circles are a successful way to improve comprehension skills while also providing English language learners with authentic social interactions.
