The Impact Of Academic Libraries On Lgbtq+ Undergraduates, Rachel S. Wexelbaum

Culminating Projects in Higher Education Administration

LGBTQ+ undergraduates may use, perceive, and value their academic libraries differently than previous generations, particularly if their campus has an LGBT resource center. This qualitative study employed Vaccaro, Russell and Koob's Minoritized Identities of Sexuality and Gender (MIoSG) Students and Contexts Model as a theoretical framework to determine how and where LGBTQ+ undergraduates find safe space on campus. Through semi-structured interviews with white and BIPOC LGBTQ+ undergraduates, the researcher constructed ecological maps that illustrated how students see themselves within the campus context and the internal and external factors that shape their use, perception, and value of the library, the LGBT …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Monterey County Free Libraries is a public government organization that provides a wide range of resources and services for residents of Monterey County including a Literacy Program that serves 52 learners who are eligible to participate in this capstone project. Participants provided demographic data and responses to Likert scale agreement questions related to the concepts of communication, connection, and knowledge sharing. Culturally Responsive Classroom Libraries In Middle School And High School English Language Arts Classrooms, Brandy Coleman Aug 2021

Culturally Responsive Classroom Libraries In Middle School And High School English Language Arts Classrooms, Brandy Coleman

Culminating Experience Projects

Research shows that the cultural makeup of students in classrooms today in the United States has changed from classrooms of the past. These changes demand teachers to create classroom libraries that are culturally responsive. Culturally responsive classroom libraries can increase student engagement, shape students’ reading identities, and provide opportunities for students to create meaning with a text. This project examines what research literature has studied regarding how culturally responsive pedagogy impacts student identities, engagement through choice, books as window, mirrors, and sliding glass doors (Bishop, 1990), and instructional practices. Using reader response theory, the project focuses on tools to identify …

For three years I had the privilege of living and serving in the Kingdom of Tonga, a group of islands in the South Pacific, as a Master’s International Program student and Peace Corps volunteer. In Tonga, I worked as an English Literacy Facilitator, partnering with counterparts on diverse projects to improve English language and literacy instruction in local schools.

In the most recent revision of its national curriculum, one of the sustainable development goals of the Tongan Ministry of Education is for teachers to learn strategies for the effective use of libraries, books, and technological resources in their teaching. To …

What Resources Do School Librarians Use When Developing New Programming: A Qualitative Inquiry, Jennifer Hansen Aug 2018

What Resources Do School Librarians Use When Developing New Programming: A Qualitative Inquiry, Jennifer Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For this qualitative analysis, I analyzed observational and interview data from two middle school librarians setting up new active learning programs. I focused my research by analyzing the preliminary data gathered in field notes from observations at the different library sites to determine what programming resources the librarians were using. A secondary consideration was drawn from preliminary evidence, which indicated the librarians turned to many on and offline information resources, including the social curating site Pinterest. After gathering initial data from observations, I gathered additional data from two interviews: the first interview focused on where the librarians find information and …

Designing And Curating A Classroom Library For Lifelong Readers, Katie Bennington Jan 2016

Designing And Curating A Classroom Library For Lifelong Readers, Katie Bennington

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education emphasizes the principle that the environment is a child’s third teacher. While the relationship between the teacher and the child is critical to learning, the physical classroom space plays an equally important role in the child’s educational journey. It is through intentional planning of a space from an educator that an environment can foster inquiry from a child. By using this principle as a foundation, this research attempts to answers the question- How do I create an environment that fosters literacy and an interest in books? The research conducted over the past …

Do Culturally Engaging Reading Materials Matter? An Analysis Of Rural Libraries In Burkina Faso, Erica Ernst Dec 2012

Do Culturally Engaging Reading Materials Matter? An Analysis Of Rural Libraries In Burkina Faso, Erica Ernst

Master's Theses

Academics have noted the lack of culturally relevant reading materials in African libraries. Book collections are primarily composed of donated materials from western countries intended for a western, rather than African audience. This research project aimed to gain insight onto children’s reading preferences in the rural Burkina Faso and to learn about the popularity of local photo books that were added in 2009. Quantitative methods examined library book checkout records in three categories of African, French, and local photo books. Additionally the library subscription records were used in order to gain information about the children including age, gender, and ethnicity. …

Library / It Mergers In Ohio's Public Two-Year Colleges: An Exploratory Study, Douglas Kaylor

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Ohio's public two-year community colleges were surveyed to determine how many have merged their libraries and information technology operations. A merger scale developed by Bolin was used as a measure of degree of merger. Results of telephone interviews with librarians at fifteen institutions showed that less than 25% of the subject colleges had some form of merged operation. This figure was similar to reports in the literature. Those Ohio colleges reporting merged operations were all large or very large institutions. This finding did not fit with the literature, which associated merged operations with small institutions. Librarians were also asked about …

The Effects Of Classification Systems On Management And Access In Selected Elementary School Libraries, Ellen L. Miller Jul 1986

The Effects Of Classification Systems On Management And Access In Selected Elementary School Libraries, Ellen L. Miller

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

Without an adequate access and delivery system for "easy" books, young children are locked out of the vast literary resources of elementary school libraries. The research described in this dissertation was conducted for the purpose of investigating the extent to which a variation in classification systems corresponded to variations in management and access. Elm's Classification System and H. W. Wilson's "E" classification for "easy" books were the two systems involved in the study.

In the spring of 1985, a questionnaire was mailed to 38 librarians in the public school systems in four cities in the Tidewater Area of Virginia--Chesapeake, Norfolk, …
