The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of teacher leadership through instructional coaching. This study was designed to find the appropriate structures that promote teacher leadership with a specific focus on using a distributed leadership model of school leadership that develops and promotes teacher-led instructional coaching. This will enable school leaders to create a shared vision and outline steps to formally add teacher leadership roles in their school organizations. In addition, it will allow for a more streamlined organizational process, leading to a more effective and efficient leadership.

Instructional coaching has become a widely used method that focuses on improving teacher effectiveness and enhancing professional growth that might help teachers focus on individual needs, growth in teaching and learning, and sharing best practices with others. Instructional coaches have the potential to bridge that gap. The mixed methods study was conducted to describe the instructional coaching process among grades 2 through 5 teachers. The qualitative differences were similarities between the literacy coach’s and the mathematics coach’s procedures and processes in goal setting, observations, meetings, conferences, and feedback. Due to the lack of focus on writing in teacher preparation programs and in-service professional development, teachers often feel unprepared to teach writing. One way to mitigate these feelings is through the use of literacy instructional coaches. Literacy instructional coaches are specialists who collaborate with teachers to help them develop specific skills, knowledge, and dispositions related to literacy instructional practices and students’ literacy performance. Existing research indicates that teachers who receive instructional coaching are more likely to use research-based practices, however, research on writing coaching is minimal. Instructional coaching has been shown to be an effective way to improve teacher practice through structured partnership and goal-oriented collaboration. This qualitative study examined the perspectives of instructional coaches, teachers, and principals on the presence of six key components of effective instructional coaching programs: building relationships, remaining connected to students, developing leadership skills, modeling for teachers, building in plan time, and remaining focused on the goal. This mixed methods study was conducted to investigate the impact the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and coaching style of an instructional coach has on middle grades teacher instructional practices. The results of this study can be used to inform school leaders, administrators, and instructional coaches on methods for improving instructional coaching practices. The study was conducted utilizing a survey instrument and interviews. The survey indicated the instructional coaches have a role in developing instructional practices, though the qualitative data indicated possibility of greater impact than in current practice. School districts across the nation are employing coaching for teachers as a means to improve teacher quality and increase student achievement. Looking specifically at instructional coaching as an intervention for teacher support, this study considers the literacy growth data of coached teachers compared to the literacy growth data of uncoached teachers when controlling for years of teaching experience. Data from this study did not find a statistically significant difference between the students’ data from the two groups of teachers.
