Body dissatisfaction is associated with numerous health consequences and is pervasive among college women. Effective interventions exist that reduce body dissatisfaction in college women by helping them resist sociocultural pressures to conform to the appearance ideal, such as the Body Project. Yet research is limited on whether social and behavioral processes help participants reduce their engagement in sociocultural appearance-ideal messages and contribute to the intervention’s effectiveness. In this dissertation, I explore peer effects and social networks among MBA students in a Canadian business school. The unique feature of the data collected for this research is that the students are administratively assigned to small groups, providing plausibly exogenous variation that allows me to identify causal peer effects. Chapter 1, “Peer Effects in an MBA class”, establishes the existence and magnitude of the effects of peer characteristics on academic outcomes of MBA students. Collaborative inter-organizational networks can be effective at catalyzing and supporting the generation and diffusion of new models and practices. With shared purpose, structure, and resources, network organizations can facilitate knowledge exchange and the growth of inter-organizational relationships. In this study, I sought to better understand how network organizations influence social capital and the spread of innovative practices. Of particular interest were the roles of national network and sub-national network organizations (sub-networks), and the interactive learning processes of network newcomers.
