Teacher Education And Professional Development On Classroom Assessment In Bangladesh: Exploring Policy And Practice Through A Vertical Case Study, Sumera Ahsan
Doctoral Dissertations
Formative Classroom Assessment (FCA) can be the single most powerful activity to promote students’ learning (Hattie, 2009). In Bangladesh FCA is not in practice (Ahsan, 2009). Policies and teacher preparation on FCA are the two factors that influence the practice of formative assessment in classrooms (Stiggins, 1999; Plake, 1993). In my research I aimed to learn how different actors, discourses, and materials come together to produce policies on FCA in policy network and translate the policies in a Teachers’ Training College (TTC), and in classrooms in an urban school. I used ‘critical socio-cultural approach to policy as practice’ (Levinson, Sutton …
Inside The Flip: A Look At Teacher Motivations And Activities In Flipped Classrooms, Philip G. Pulley
Inside The Flip: A Look At Teacher Motivations And Activities In Flipped Classrooms, Philip G. Pulley
Theses and Dissertations
In the educational setting of the 21st Century and with requirements imposed on schools through state and federal mandates such as the Every Student Succeeds Act, teachers are looking for ways bring additional higher level activities and collaboration into their classrooms. These requirements along with increased educational technologies in schools have many teachers exploring the flipped classroom model of instruction. In a flipped classroom, educators flip direct classroom instruction and traditional homework or practice. Students might watch a lecture video at home covering a concept at home and then apply the concept to problems in class with the aid of …
Motivation: Why Are Students Taking Dual-Credit Courses, Chyenne Haden
Motivation: Why Are Students Taking Dual-Credit Courses, Chyenne Haden
Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning
With a growing number of high school students taking advantage of dual-credit courses, the need to understand what motivating factors are at play is more important than ever. This study was conducted within an 11th grade dual-credit history class for the purpose of discovering what motivated those students to enroll in a college level course while still in high school. Participants in the study were given the opportunity to reflect on their decision to enroll in dual-credit through a focus group and individual interviews as well as a survey. The data collected through these methods was analyzed using the …
Research Based Co-Teaching Practices And Their Realization In The New Jersey High School Classroom, Thomas K. Donovan
Research Based Co-Teaching Practices And Their Realization In The New Jersey High School Classroom, Thomas K. Donovan
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative research study reviews co-teaching practices suggested to high school educators by their professional literature. Through a systematic analysis of published studies on the topic, a comprehensive list of suggested co-teaching practices from the past ten years was created. The study then explored the realization of these practices in the high school co-teaching classroom through surveys of 61 high school co-teachers in New Jersey. Both phases of this study assisted with the identification of opportunities for improving co-teaching practices, professional development on co-teaching, and instructional pedagogy.
Math I Benchmark Testing: Friend Or Foe?, Shelley Gainey West
Math I Benchmark Testing: Friend Or Foe?, Shelley Gainey West
Education Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study addresses the ability of locally developed Math I benchmark assessments to predict student performance on the Math I end-of-course (EOC) state assessment for a rural county in North Carolina. Many districts in North Carolina lack funds to purchase commercially developed benchmarks and must rely on district personnel to develop these assessments. Locally developed benchmark assessments are not typically validated or considered psychometrically sound. Signal Detection Theory (SDT) was used to determine cut-off values on the locally developed Math I benchmark assessments for pass/fail grouping of students that will inform instructional interventions prior to the Math I EOC …
Preservice Agricultural Education Teachers And Secondary Education Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Professional Identity, Hailey Gates
Preservice Agricultural Education Teachers And Secondary Education Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Professional Identity, Hailey Gates
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
During the nineteenth century, a decision was made to separate the preparation of agricultural education teachers from their elementary and secondary counterparts (Hearings, 1908; Heren & Hillison, 1996; Hillison, 1986). The majority of land-grant universities and colleges have continued to prepare agricultural education preservice teachers within the college of agriculture, separate from other secondary education preservice teachers in the college of education (Myers & Dyer, 2004). Despite the differences among content disciplines, teachers who possess a strong sense of self-efficacy and professional identity have higher success rates in the classroom when it comes to collaboration, involvement, and student achievement (Ashton …
Precalculus And Act: A Quantitative Study Of Five Tennessee High Schools, Michelle R. Phipps
Precalculus And Act: A Quantitative Study Of Five Tennessee High Schools, Michelle R. Phipps
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if students scored significantly higher on the ACT after taking precalculus than they had scored on the ACT prior to taking precalculus. The researcher investigated whether there is an increase, not only in ACT composite scores, but also in ACT math subtest scores after high school students completed a precalculus course. The researcher also investigated differences regarding gender, socio-economic status, and race.
Five Tennessee high schools from four counties and five different districts were used in this study. The study involved 208 participants and covered a span of three years. The findings …
The Impact Of Tracking Students In Mathematics On Middle School Student Achievement Outcomes, David P. Glasner
The Impact Of Tracking Students In Mathematics On Middle School Student Achievement Outcomes, David P. Glasner
ETD Archive
The purpose of this study was to explore whether and how tracking structures in mathematics courses at the middle school level relate to differences in achievement between white and black students. This study used propensity score matching to compare the achievement outcomes of students enrolled in advanced mathematics classes, with students of comparable ability and background enrolled in grade-level math classes. The study sample was comprised of 1,510 students. Results from the study show that enrollment in an advanced-math course was associated with statistically significant improvement in math achievement for average-ability students. In addition, study results show that increases in …
Strategies And Assessments To Support Special Education Students' Writing The Literacy Test, Angelo Caesar Maniccia
Strategies And Assessments To Support Special Education Students' Writing The Literacy Test, Angelo Caesar Maniccia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many special education (SPED) students are failing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) despite writing instruction provided by SPED teachers. The purpose of this study was to understand teachers' perceptions about why students were failing the literacy/writing test and document whether evidence-based assessment and writing practices were implemented. Cognitive-behavioral theory served as the conceptual framework for this study. The research questions in this study focused on SPED teachers perceptions regarding students not passing the OSSLT, observations of whether assessment and instruction for writing aligned with best practices, and collecting baseline curriculum-based measurement (CBM) data of SPED students' current writing …
