Unmasking Whiteness: Progressing Toward Cultural Responsiveness Within A Rti Framework, Melinda F. Scheetz
Unmasking Whiteness: Progressing Toward Cultural Responsiveness Within A Rti Framework, Melinda F. Scheetz
Dissertations
Response to Intervention (RTI) developed out of educational policies and practices that comprise NCLB and IDEA. RTI is a system to ensure all students receive high-quality instruction that meets their needs, increases opportunities to learn, and prevents reading failure. A culturally relevant RTI framework offers the most promising pedagogical approach to quality instruction and educational equity. The purpose of this study was to understand, describe, and explore the intersection of culturally relevant practices and RTI. The research questions that guided this study were: What can be learned about a culturally responsive approach to RTI by listening to teachers’ perspectives and …
Equitable Access To Education For Adult English Language Learners, Colleen Schmitt
Equitable Access To Education For Adult English Language Learners, Colleen Schmitt
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question addressed in this project was, How can adult education programs provide more equitable access to education for adult English Learners? To answer this question, the author researched the historical expansion of language access rights for English Language Learners (ELLs) in federally-assisted education programs, including nondiscrimination provisions for adult ELLs in adult basic education programs. These standards of equitability were then used to examine gaps in policy and practice related to equal educational opportunity for adult ELLs in programs governed by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (2014). The author then developed an advocacy project in the form …
Firm But Fair: Authoritative School Climate As A Predictor Of Restorative Justice Readiness, Latanya Sherrie Greer
Firm But Fair: Authoritative School Climate As A Predictor Of Restorative Justice Readiness, Latanya Sherrie Greer
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The harmful effects of exclusionary disciplinary practices, including its disproportionate impact on Black students, have led to calls for school discipline reform at both the national and state levels. Many have called for the dissolution of zero-tolerance policies and the adoption of alternative methods that can ameliorate their harmful impact. Two reform efforts that have been proffered to address this issue center on school climate and restorative justice (RJ). This study focused on narrow aspects of both: Authoritative School Climate (ASC) and restorative justice readiness (RJR). RJR is defined as the measure of beliefs aligned with foundational RJ principles and …
Breaking The Language Barrier: Equitable Assessment In General Chemistry, Eshani Lee
Breaking The Language Barrier: Equitable Assessment In General Chemistry, Eshani Lee
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Because language provides the framework through which knowledge is constructed, it is crucial to consider the ways in which students with limited English proficiencies are able to express their understanding. English language learners (ELLs) make up a significant portion of the student body in the education system and represent many ethnic and racial minorities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) fields (Burke & Mattis, 2007). Despite the national push to build a more diversified, STEM-ready workforce, there is little research that considers the way ELLs are assessed in STEM courses at the postsecondary level. Literature reports that science tests …
Exploring The Racial Microaggressions American Sign Language–English Interpreters Commit, Cheryl Gallon
Exploring The Racial Microaggressions American Sign Language–English Interpreters Commit, Cheryl Gallon
Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies and Communication Equity Thesis or Action Research Project
This phenomenological case study explores the racial microaggression committed by ASL– English interpreters. Data regarding microaggression events were collected by documenting experiences of Deaf People of Color through semi-structured interviews. To date, there is not any identified research investigating this topic. The field of professional sign language interpretation has a historical praxis of centering White epistemologies, while marginalizing the lived experiences of both Deaf and hearing People of Color in both formative interpreter education, as well as professional trainings. The growing interest in topics relating to social justice in the field of sign language interpretation has brought about an increase …

Repairing Wounds And Promoting Belonging And Resiliency In A Tracked English Classroom, Emily Wolper
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
A large body of research shows that academic tracking has the potential to negatively impact a student’s feeling of belonging on campus. However, students express a greater sense of belonging when they take classes with students who mirror some aspect of their identity. The purpose of this study was to understand the complex ways in which students in tracked or low-level classes develop their identity as learners and experience belonging at school with a predominantly white students and staff. Participants included students who were enrolled in Academic English and Support English classes during the 2017-2018 school year. Support students participated …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore Congolese refugee students’ experiences in higher education in the United States. In order to understand the challenges Congolese students face in higher education, this study used narrative inquiry methodology to investigate Congolese students’ lived experiences that affected their educational endeavors before and after resettlement to the United States. The study examined personal stories of 10 Congolese students in the Pacific Northwest using semi-structured in-depth interviews, one-on-one follow-up interviews, field notes and two focus group interviews. Using narrative analysis five reoccurring themes were identified and discussed in the findings. The study findings indicate …
School To Prison Pipeline Unmasked: Review Of How The School To Prison Pipeline Reinforces Disproportionality In Mass Incarceration, Akeem A. Barnes
School To Prison Pipeline Unmasked: Review Of How The School To Prison Pipeline Reinforces Disproportionality In Mass Incarceration, Akeem A. Barnes
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Strict law and order policies, due to the War on Drugs, enacted in the 1970's have led to the mass incarceration that continues to plague communities of color. Simultaneously, zero tolerance policies in the nation’s schools have helped to fuel the mass incarceration of people of color by ensuring that students of color are disproportionately disciplined via suspended or expelled, criminalized, and eventually funneled into prison. This paper analyzes how the School to Prison Pipeline reinforces the disproportionate incarceration of people of color by targeting students of color. It identifies the rise and implementation of zero tolerance policies in the …
Kindergarten Teacher Autonomy In High And Low Socioeconomic Environments, Allison Catherine Mcdonald
Kindergarten Teacher Autonomy In High And Low Socioeconomic Environments, Allison Catherine Mcdonald
MSU Graduate Theses
Kindergarten teachers are immersed in a high stakes educational environment and this environment has altered how kindergarten teachers must teach. Exploring the different distribution of autonomy in high and low-income groups contributes to the research about educational equity. This study examined the relationship between income level of teaching environment and kindergarten teachers’ levels of self-perceived autonomy. The research question that guided this study was: do kindergarten teachers in higher income schools experience greater levels of self-perceived autonomy than kindergarten teachers in low-income schools? The Teaching Autonomy Scale developed by Pearson & Hall (1993) was used to survey 91 kindergarten teacher …
Preservice Teachers’ Creation Of And Beliefs About Culturally Responsive And Critical Mathematics Tasks, And Their Beliefs About The Students For Whom Their Tasks Were Intended, Tisa Trask
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, case study methodology was used to explore secondary mathematics preservice teachers (PSTs) attempts to construct tasks for lower income, predominantly African American students at a cultural immersion site who PSTs encountered frequently and interviewed. PST beliefs about their tasks and their students were also investigated. The first research aim of this study was to investigate PSTs’ attempts to create culturally responsive mathematics tasks for themselves and for the students. PSTs incorporated students’ personal and cultural details in tasks for the students. However, they had greater difficulty integrating cultural backdrops into the primary mathematics activities of tasks they …

Michalski Ma Portfolio: Finding My Path, Victoria L. Michalski
Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
This portfolio is the culmination of my work in the English Teaching specialty Master's program at Bowling Green State University. In addition to the works I produced for my classes and subsequently re-wrote for my portfolio, I've added an analytical reflection about my growth and evolution during my studies in the English MA program, and about overcoming my difficulties until I finally found the connection between English and historical interests that I sorely needed in order to heighten my enthusiasm and motivation. This reflection brings together the reasons I chose the works in my portfolio to represent my initial discomfort …
Educational Policy Development For Closing The Black And White Achievement Gap, Markisha Mitchell
Educational Policy Development For Closing The Black And White Achievement Gap, Markisha Mitchell
Dissertations
Abstract
Across the United States in almost every city, every suburb, and every rural area, there is a gap between the achievements of Black and White students. The term “achievement gap” has become an accepted label in situations where Black students severely underperform relative to their White counterparts. Many school districts have discretely avoided discussing and/or addressing this gap for decades. School District Z, located in an urban suburb of a large Midwestern city, is the focus of this research as they attempt to address the gap. Approximately two-thirds of District Z is composed of students of color, yet the …

Organizational Improvement Plan: Improving Core French Teacher Equity Within A French Immersion School, Angelica Farr
Organizational Improvement Plan: Improving Core French Teacher Equity Within A French Immersion School, Angelica Farr
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
My Organizational Improvement Plan examines the systemic inequity between the Core French Program and the French Immersion Program in Ontario secondary schools. Leadership, in the form of Principals, can play a significant role in this issue. Principals who prioritize the equitable distribution of resources and professional development in French Immersion settings may positively impact teacher efficacy; however, in Core French settings, Principals’ realm of priorities often lies in other curriculum areas.
Various researchers, such as Lapkin (2003) and Mady (2010), have looked at the systemic inequity between the two French programs. It has been shown that there is a disproportionate …
A Democratic Conundrum: A Study Of Online Student Performance At Community Colleges, Lavita Mcmath Turner
A Democratic Conundrum: A Study Of Online Student Performance At Community Colleges, Lavita Mcmath Turner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Online education at community colleges has the potential to further democratize education by expanding access through the availability of anytime/anywhere courses for people who might be unable to attend college otherwise. However, the literature reveals the existence of performance gaps between online and face-to-face courses at community colleges, ones that can have negative consequences on the upward mobility of its diverse student population. This study investigates such a trend at one urban university. The study shows complexities in the relationship between online learning at community colleges through a mixed methods study of online performance at a community college. The findings …
Nurturing Potential: The Impact Of Talent Development On Underrepresented Gifted Populations, Sara Newell
Nurturing Potential: The Impact Of Talent Development On Underrepresented Gifted Populations, Sara Newell
Education Dissertations and Projects
Data on gifted education show a clear problem: lack of diversity in gifted education programs. This fact is compounded by additional data showing a disparaging difference in achievement of Caucasian versus minority students. Together, these concepts are referred to as the excellence gap in gifted education. Talent development, or the location and nurturing of potential talent in underrepresented populations, has been recommended in the gifted community as a possible step in resolving these inequities (Ellis & Martin, 2017; Ford, 2010; National Association of Gifted Children [NAGC], 2015; Reinhard, 2016; Thornbury, 2010).
Through an explanatory mixed methods study, this research analyzed …

They all mentioned teachers need training, support and resources. Teachers should possess the skills that facilitate all learning …
"Framing" Equity: Using Frame Analysis To Explore Superintendents' Attempts To Implement Policies For Equity, James Charles Coviello
"Framing" Equity: Using Frame Analysis To Explore Superintendents' Attempts To Implement Policies For Equity, James Charles Coviello
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As the day-to-day leaders of a school district, superintendents oversee budgetary and other district operations, help give practical meaning to federal and state policy, and set local district policy for the schools under their charge. Superintendents therefore work in a unique and important leadership space that exists between federal, state, local governments and the principals and teachers that educate students. This space is also often complex and risk-laden, with multiple constituencies and stakeholders vying for resources and striving for program changes that are often in conflict. Superintendents therefore play an important role in "framing" - or strategically communicating - policy …
Promoting Equity For Black Males: A Master Gardener’S Narrative For School Change, Antoinette R. Hudson
Promoting Equity For Black Males: A Master Gardener’S Narrative For School Change, Antoinette R. Hudson
Higher Education: Doctoral Research Projects
This doctoral research praxis project discusses the status of Black males in education, provides explanations on the educational disparities that exist for Black male students, and defines possible strategies to remedy the persistent and chronic problem of Black male underachievement in schools. Racism is viewed as one of the factors that contributes to the dilemma of Black male students’ underachievement in school. To better understand the educational disparities, Jones’s conceptual framework, three levels of racism: “A Gardener’s Tale,” was discussed to deconstruct the ways racism may possibly occur within the educational system. Autoethnography was used as the most appropriate mode …
