Effective Art Education Practices: Evaluation, Policy, And Discourse, Heather Romaine Casteel Dec 2018

Effective Art Education Practices: Evaluation, Policy, And Discourse, Heather Romaine Casteel

Doctoral Dissertations

With First to the Top legislation in Tennessee, art teachers are being evaluated annually with a one-size-fits-all measurement tool designed for all educators, regardless of the content or grade level they teach. The TEAM evaluation model is meant as both a means of accountability and professional development meant to improve teaching practices, and, hence, improve student learning (TDOE, 2012). Two policy documents, the TEAM rubrics and the NAEA Professional Standards for Visual Arts Educators (2009) provide teachers, school leaders, and policymakers with guidelines for determining the effectiveness of art teachers. The purpose of this study was to investigate how art …

Movement For Learners: Physical Activity Impacting The Academic Performance Of Elementary Students, Kristen Bark

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Physical activity is essential for developing youth to help build their muscles and develop their brains. Though research verifies the importance of movement for health, school systems require very little activity. This capstone uses a compilation of studies from doctors and scientists on physical activity and brain development. The study also incorporates real experiences of teachers adding physical activity in their own curriculum. The collection of this research helps to answer the question, How does physical activity impact academic performance of elementary students? Research concludes that physical activity does have a positive impact on the academic performance of elementary students. …

Curriculum Development Using Artistic Inquiry In An Arts Magnet Foundation Class, Debra Bestland

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This project sought to answer the question; how can the skills of artistic inquiry be taught in an Arts Magnet Foundation Class? This project covered the creation of a mental construct for artistic inquiry and development of the first three units of a twelve-unit curriculum. Initially the author established a six-phase model of artistic inquiry which was then implemented in the development of individual units. The six components include: question formulation, annotated research, proposal making, creating with intent, presenting in a public format, and reflecting on the work. Each unit focused on teaching and implementing one of the phases. The …

Effects Of Evaluative Praise Versus Behavior Descriptive Praise On Intrinsic Motivation And Behavior, Stacie Mccormack Jul 2018

Effects Of Evaluative Praise Versus Behavior Descriptive Praise On Intrinsic Motivation And Behavior, Stacie Mccormack

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The author’s research inquiry was: what is the impact of behavior descriptive praise and evaluative praise on intrinsic student motivation and behavior? The literature states that using evaluative praise can cause a ‘fixed mindset’ where a child is fearful of trying new tasks, and confused on the desired behavior of the educator. Moreover using behavior descriptive praise allows children to view effort and working hard a positive aspect of learning, while the educator is able to easily establish clear expectations for the students. This study took place over a four month period with two different third grade art classes. Through …

Defining Contagion : Examining Imagination As A Source Of The Infection In Print Studios, Joshua Tangen Jun 2018

Defining Contagion : Examining Imagination As A Source Of The Infection In Print Studios, Joshua Tangen

Masters Theses

In this thesis, I attempted to define a contagious component of art education within a community print shop. In this quest, I examine theories around imagination, creativity, and psychology through an analysis of the work of Maxine Greene, Kieran Egan, Ken Robinson, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Gathered from a variety of sources that include, books, scholarly articles, and online video, I link Greene’s concepts of what role imagination plays in critical thinking and empathy, Egan’s promotion of imagination’s ability to create personal and emotional engagement, Robinson’s ideas about creativity in learning, and Csikszentmihayli’s theory of flow. Connecting these four philosophers are …

Art Museums And Latino English Learners: Teaching Artists In The K-8 Classroom, Veronica Alvarez Jan 2018

Art Museums And Latino English Learners: Teaching Artists In The K-8 Classroom, Veronica Alvarez

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

Latino English learners (ELs), among the largest student population in the United States K-12 school system, continue to lag behind their English-proficient peers. They also tend to attend segregated schools, have less-qualified teachers, and lack access to rigorous curriculum, including the arts. Museum education departments have increasingly sought to fill the gap in arts education for underserved populations. This mixed methods study explored the degree to which teaching artists (TAs) from a large metropolitan museum are effectively addressing the art education needs of Latino ELs. The dissertation study occurred in two phases. Phase 1 included quantitative analysis of observations of …
