Bridge To Her Education (Bthere): Black Girls And The School To Prison Pipeline, Otasha Clark

Capstone Collection

The purpose of this capstone paper is to create a citizen centered advocacy strategy plan, which will be launched through the Girls Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), in order to at the very least, slow the school to prison pipeline. It refers specifically to the zero tolerance policy, which has intensified the movement of Black girls into the pipeline. After reviewing the literature, it was evident that the zero tolerance policy in combination with historical gender and race stereotypes surrounding Black girls, had resulted in implicit bias as a motivational factor in the way Black girls are being punished. Furthermore, …

The Social Factors Of Fossilization, Ashley Brigham Apr 2018

The Social Factors Of Fossilization, Ashley Brigham

MA TESOL Collection

The notion of fossilization has been one of the most controversial, yet enduring topics in second language acquisition (SLA) theory since its first appearance in Selinker’s 1972 seminal article “Interlanguage.” In the past, work regarding fossilization sought to either support or challenge its existence, to determine the putative causes and to predict what linguistic items were prone to becoming fossilized. Initially, the possible causes which enjoyed the most attention were first language interference and the learner’s age and length of residency in the target language community. Now, however, with the current climate of SLA acknowledging that both learning and non-learning …

Engaging International Transfer Students At University Of Washington Tacoma, Amber Hallberg

Capstone Collection

International student social engagement on university campuses is increasingly challenging as more students transfer from community colleges and commute from long distances. Furthermore, international student programming has traditionally viewed appropriate engagement behavior through the lens of the host campus’ cultural norms, not through the lens of the students’ native cultural attitudes and behavior. As a result, the programming is unrelatable, overlooks international students’ actual needs, and/or poorly attended. This case study at the University of Washington Tacoma, which was conducted by an international student advisor, used qualitative research methods to examine the ways in which cultural dimensions and contexts may …

It follows that they would expect trainers to embody and demonstrate the qualities of a good, quality teacher. The aim of this study is to understand what is expected of teacher trainers from society, trainees, and the trainers themselves. To do so, this mixed-methods study will present …

However, many of the resources available and best practices for the profession are focused toward advisors who work at institutions of higher education. These resources often discuss how contact with on-site students should be established, but only vague references are made for advisors employed by a provider. This study discusses the potential impacts that education abroad advisors at third-party providers may have on the student …

Instead, it seeks to look deeper into the phenomenon of lesson observation feedback through the eyes of a teacher in order to see what aspects of lesson observation are useful and guide educators towards their development. The Experience Of Transgender Students In Study Abroad Programming, Nicholas Mcintyre

Capstone Collection

Studying abroad has become a highly valued experience for college students, though the types of participants that study abroad programming attracts tend to be fairly homogenous (Havergal, 2016; IIE, 2017).
