Using Reader’S Theater During Small Group Reading Instruction To Increase Prosody Within A Second Grade Classroom Of Title I, Tier Ii Students, Amanda Mahlum, Stacey Knudson

Masters of Arts in Education Action Research Papers

The objective of this study was to help second grade children increase prosody by using Reader’s Theater to improve all aspects of reading and comprehension. The research was conducted collaboratively by a second grade teacher and a Title I Reading Specialist. Four Tier II, Title I reading students struggling with reading fluency were selected as participants. Reader’s Theater was implemented within a small group setting where students reread scripts while educators modeled and coached them. Data was collected using student self assessments, observational field notes, digital recordings, and a reading performance rubric. The data revealed a significant increase in the …

All The World's A Stage...The Effect Of Reader's Theater On The Reading Fluency Rates, Comprehension Levels And Attitudes Of Second Graders, Cheryl Lynn Parker

Education Dissertations and Projects

Second-grade students of the targeted school were performing below a level of proficiency in reading fluency and comprehension. Many students were reluctant to read. This dissertation is designed to study the effects of Reader’s Theater on the reading fluency rates, comprehension scores, and attitudes of second-grade readers. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent using Reader’s Theater affects the reading fluency rates, comprehension levels, and attitudes of second-grade readers, thus answering the question, “To what extent does the use of Reader’s Theater affect the fluency rates, comprehension levels, and attitudes towards reading of second-grade readers?”

Developing Fluent First-Grade Readers Using Repeated Readings, Gina Bernhagen, Angela Fischer, Jana Job May 2016

Developing Fluent First-Grade Readers Using Repeated Readings, Gina Bernhagen, Angela Fischer, Jana Job

Masters of Arts in Education Action Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate what effects, if any, the implementation of repeated readings, as an intervention, has on first-grade students’ reading fluency. Baseline data was collected, and twelve first-grade students were chosen to participate in the small group repeated reading intervention. Throughout the six-week repeated readings intervention, students practiced short vowel word lists, short leveled passages, and sight word lists until these words became automatic and fluency and accuracy increased. Data collected during this study included benchmark Fountas and Pinnell reading level assessments, benchmark AIMSweb R-CBM assessments, AIMSweb R-CBM progress monitoring, short grade-level passages and sight …

Masters of Arts in Education Action Research Papers

READING FLUENCY IN ELEMENTARY Abstract The purpose of this research was to identify ways of improving reading fluency for elementary children in grades first through sixth. Children scoring below the 40th percentile on reading standardized test scores, determined our testing population. Four data collections tools were used, including a child-centered survey, a reading fluency rubric, teacher observations, and fluency graphs. The Read Naturally Program was used as the reading fluency intervention. Students made fluency progress in both the upper and lower elementary levels. This research highlights the importance of reading fluency interventions. Further research might focus on self reflection for …

Utilising Voice Recognition Software To Improve Reading Fluency Of Struggling Adolescent Readers, Peter Count Jan 2016

Utilising Voice Recognition Software To Improve Reading Fluency Of Struggling Adolescent Readers, Peter Count

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Approximately 15-20% of secondary students in Australia experience reading difficulties. For many, the cognitive effort required to decode words or the lack of automaticity in the elements that contribute to fluent reading prevents effective reading comprehension. Because reading comprehension is of critical importance across the curriculum, students with difficulties in this area are at significant academic risk.

One effective method of improving reading fluency is ‘repeated readings’ (NICHHD, 2000). The purpose of this study was to examine whether the use of repeated readings delivered via a home-based program employing voice recognition software (VRS) could improve the reading fluency and self-perception …
