Prior research has indicated that teacher beliefs can negatively affect teacher behavior. These beliefs often include unrecognized prejudices/biases regarding diversity including race, class and gender, which can lead to learning, communication and achievement issues between diverse students and their teachers. The main purpose of this research was to determine the relationship of both personal and professional teacher diversity belief typologies to student achievement in middle level math class rooms in North Georgia in 2009. This research study examined the long-term effects of a professional development study tour to Southeast Asia that took place in 2001. Participants included ten public school teachers from Western Massachusetts, which has a significant population of people of Vietnamese and Cambodian descent. Funded by a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad grant, the purpose of the study tour was to increase teacher awareness, knowledge and understanding of contemporary Southeast Asia so that they could more effectively address the educational needs of students representing diverse cultural backgrounds, particularly immigrant and refugee youth, through the development of culturally relevant curricula and lesson plans. The Supreme Court's decision in the historic landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas (1954) "represents the most significant ruling in the history of the Supreme Court on equal educational opportunity. It is the cornerstone of all subsequent legal developments ensuring the rights of disenfranchised groups" (Ford & Webb, 1994, p. 359).
