Effectiveness Of In-School Suspension As Used In Selected Washington State Public Schools, Lois J. Bernath

Current in-school suspension programs and their effectiveness were studied. Selected junior high schools and middle schools in the state of Washington were surveyed, and twenty-one responded with information concerning their in-school suspension programs. The results showed that in-school suspension programs in Washington state, if established with certain fundamental criteria, are an effective alternative to out of school suspension. They also provide a learning process for discipline cases at the junior high school and middle school levels.

A preschool model for 3-5 year old rural handicapped children is based on developmental skills in the areas of receptive and expressive language acquisition, fine and gross motor movement and beginning cognitive skills. Also included, to facilitate the establishment of a new rural preschool is a list of materials needed to begin the program and a list of free and low cost legal, medical, and assessment services. The need for rural preschool programs is discussed as well as reasons for growth of preschool in Washington state.

The purpose of this study was that of determining if intelligence quotient mean test scores of middle school students of different races, sexes, and socioeconomic classes could be significantly increased through the use of tangible and intangible rewards of money and praise. One hundred and thirty-five students from lower and middle socioeconomic classes were randomly assigned to three groups. The stratified groups, two experimental and one control, contained approximately the same numbers of male and female students. The students were identified as lower and middle socioeconomic class whites and lower socioeconomic blacks. A counterbalanced design was employed for the study. …

The problem of this study was to determine if differences existed in the supervisors' perceptions of the importance of specified supervisory competencies. A list of thirty-six competencies which had been developed and validated by Ben M. Harris was adopted. Competencies were defined as any combination of knowledge and skill that is adequate for accomplishing some specified outcome. Included in the study were supervisors at the state department level in nine Southeastern states which were as follows: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The purpose of this study was to investigate school building utilization in Kentucky and make appropriate recommendations for efficient procedural guidelines in the decision-making process for future utilization. The study was presented in five parts. First, related literature was searched for criteria for guidelines for building utilization. Second, a survey instrument was mailed to the 181 school superintendents of Kentucky to determine building utilization. One hundred percent were returned. The purpose of this project was to develop a set of instructional materials that would provide classroom teachers with a motivational method for teaching the skill of following written directions. The set of 180 direction exercises provided practice in applying phonetic elements and structural analysis in the context of a reading activity. Comprehension skills were practiced through the development of key concepts, use of structural words, comparing and contrasting ideas, making appropriate judgments and teaching cognitive strategies. With daily use, the directions provided continuous practice in essential reading skills while eliciting observable consequent behaviors which implied language reception or comprehension.

The needs of gifted students and strategies for meeting those needs were studied. A four- stage enrichment model was designed, accompanied by a teacher's guide for implementation of a sample application of the model at the seventh grade level. The four stages of enrichment activities included in the model were (1) exploratory activities beyond the regular curriculum, (2) activities to develop critical reading and thinking skills, (3) activities for improvement of information-gathering skills, and (4) a mentorship phase.

A search was made to locate public secondary schools which housed grade twelve and whose curricula were in keeping with State requirements for a diploma. The problem was to determine whether selected psycholinguistic instructional aids were effective in remediating learning deficiencies among early elementary children (grades 1-3). Literature was reviewed to substantiate a need for the use of psycholinguistic instructional aids for remediation of learning deficiencies among early elementary children. Research surveyed included auditory perception skills, language skills, motor skills, and visual perception skills.
