The purpose of this action research project is to see the effects of goal setting, giving effective feedback, and student reflection time on self-selected goals in reading. This research setting was conducted with 23 students in a suburban area of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. A pre-survey was given to students before the action research was conducted, with a post-survey given to compare the data. As part of the intervention, students made self-selected reading goals. Then students were given teacher feedback using effective feedback strategies. In addition to feedback, students were given time to reflect on their feedback and goals. …

The purpose of this study was to determine effective ways to improve fluency among lower elementary Montessori students. The study was comprised of 33 students ages 6-9 who attend public Montessori classrooms in North America. The field of research on reading fluency and comprehension was surveyed as a background to support this action research study, which utilized an experimental design, collecting quantitative data through student-generated artifacts. The researchers implemented a reading block into their Montessori classrooms. Montessori family education is a stepping stone in forming a bridge between school and home. This action research is focused on increasing familial attendance in Montessori education classes. Using quantitative and qualitative research methods are important tools in discovering the needs of the school community. Attendance, Likert scales and feedback questionnaires were useful tools in reaching out to the familial community. Implementing the changes based on the research results showed a drastic increase in attendance. The purpose of this action research was to investigate the effects of frequent formative assessment and feedback on the summative assessment. The research took place over a four week period in two Algebra 9 classes with 58 participants. The participants completed a check in form at the beginning and end of the unit, three to five daily quizzes each week, and could participate in a discussion group at the end of the unit. The purpose of this research project was to measure the effectiveness of grading practices commonly associated with Standard-Based Grading (SBG). Participants included 60 ninth and tenth grade struggling readers in a rural Midwestern high school. Qualitative data collection methods included: Google Forms, student reflection and journaling, conferencing with students, and comparing this year’s grades to last year’s grades (by student). During a four week period, certain SBG practices were implemented such as: offering re-dos, highest possible F (59%), specific feedback, and not grading all formative work. This action research study was conducted in a kindergarten classroom at a public elementary school, and it included 18 students, 10 boys and eight girls. My study examined the effect of feedback on learning by utilizing rubrics and target statements to increase student self-motivation and engagement. Data was collected from a pre- and post- student feedback form, a rubric, a student observation form, a student discussion form and a teacher reflection journal.
