The Effect Of Familiarity On Learning With Video Clips Containing Seductive Details, Jonah Lee Ruddy Aug 2018

The Effect Of Familiarity On Learning With Video Clips Containing Seductive Details, Jonah Lee Ruddy

Doctoral Dissertations

Seductive information included in educational lessons can arouse students’ emotional and situational interest. However, research on seductive details across instructional modalities shows both helpful and harmful effects on learning. The seductive details effect describes the negative influence of interesting, but irrelevant, information on achieving learning goals. Results from studies of videos with relevant and seductive details in multimedia lessons are inconclusive. Prior knowledge of target information has been shown to moderate the seductive details effect. In this study, the moderating effect of prior exposure to, or familiarity with, seductive, rather than target, information was explored using a multifactorial design. The …

The Role Of Prior Knowledge, Situational Interest, And Case Study Pedagogy In The Undergraduate Biology Classroom., Ally Hunter Jul 2018

The Role Of Prior Knowledge, Situational Interest, And Case Study Pedagogy In The Undergraduate Biology Classroom., Ally Hunter

Doctoral Dissertations

In the undergraduate science classroom, case study pedagogy is method that uses stories with dilemmas and/or questions to convey scientific content. Case study pedagogy shows promise as an active learning pedagogy to meet the demands of 21st century biology education initiatives; however, there is a dearth of information on how students learn with case studies in the undergraduate biology classroom. The purpose of this study was to investigate variables that impact learning with case studies (prior content and contextual knowledge, situational interest, and pedagogical strategies) and the relationships between those variables to further understand how students learn with case studies …

Teaching Complex Content In Healthcare: A Comparison Of The Effect Of Three Types Of Multimedia Pretraining On Schematic Knowledge And Near Transfer, Melisa Patrice Kaye Apr 2018

Teaching Complex Content In Healthcare: A Comparison Of The Effect Of Three Types Of Multimedia Pretraining On Schematic Knowledge And Near Transfer, Melisa Patrice Kaye

Doctoral Dissertations

Challenged to teach complex content to students, university educators in healthcare disciplines face a practical need for effective pedagogical approaches. The preponderance of multimedia and digital resources in and beyond college classrooms suggests that solutions to teaching complex content should leverage educational technology and multimedia resources. The multimedia principle of pretraining is one effective way to augment complex content learning. The pretraining principle specifies that learning is more effective when the names and characteristics of main terms and concepts are introduced before more nuanced and complex content is presented.

The purpose of this study was to investigate three approaches to …

Elementary And Secondary Science Teachers Negotiation Of Controversial Science Content: The Relationships Among Prior Conception Appropriation, Thinking Disposition, And Learning About Geologic Time, James Harold Roberson May 2011

Elementary And Secondary Science Teachers Negotiation Of Controversial Science Content: The Relationships Among Prior Conception Appropriation, Thinking Disposition, And Learning About Geologic Time, James Harold Roberson

Doctoral Dissertations

A major component of the values people place on science and their attitude toward it is their openness to new ideas or overall open-mindedness. An individual’s values and attitudes become integrally connected to their prior knowledge and conceptions regarding science and science content. Sometimes the nature of a natural phenomenon and the scientific explanation for the phenomenon is controversial. A controversial scientific concept is one that evokes emotion and forces individuals to assess the values associated with this content and make assessments of their attitudes toward it. This is especially true during learning. The purpose of this study was to …
