Positioning Techniques To Reduce The Occurrence Of Dequervain’S Tendonitis In Nursing Mothers, Alison Virzi

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

DeQuervain's tendonitis is an inflammation of two tendons: the extensor pollicis brevis and the abductor pollicis longus as they cross in the first dorsal compartment of the wrist. Symptoms include pain, swelling along the radial aspect of the wrist, and a decrease in thumb motion. A positive Finkelstein's test at examination is seen. Frequently it is caused by repetitively gripping, lifting, and positioning the wrist in flexion, ulnar deviation with thumb extension. It is a common diagnosis in women, referred to as "washerwoman's syndrome". It is also common for new mothers to experience due to the demands their wrists are …

A Pilot Study Comparing Total Physical Response Storytelling™ With The Grammar-Translation Teaching Strategy To Determine Their Effectiveness In Vocabulary Acquisition Among English As A Second Language Adult Learners, Ruben Castro

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

This study evaluated the effectiveness of Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS™) compared to the Grammar-Translation approach for acquiring and retaining new vocabulary in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class. The subjects were adult Hispanic learners with limited literacy. An experimental design approach was used to gather information on the effect of TPRS™ and Grammar-Translation approaches on student vocabulary retention. A total of 25 participants signed the consent to be a research subject. All participants took two written pretests that examined their knowledge of common words. Following each pretest, the instructor taught three classes using the Grammar-Translation approach and …

2010 A Digital Odyssey: Exploring Document Camera Technology And Computer Self-Efficacy In A Digital Era, Robert Joaquin Hoge May 2010

2010 A Digital Odyssey: Exploring Document Camera Technology And Computer Self-Efficacy In A Digital Era, Robert Joaquin Hoge

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Within the sphere of education, navigating throughout a digital world has become a matter of necessity for the developing professional, as with the advent of Document Camera Technology (DCT). This study explores the pedagogical implications of implementing DCT; to see if there is a relationship between teachers’ comfort with DCT and to the self-efficacy beliefs of teachers. The literature describes our educational system “at risk,” comprised of digital “natives” and “immigrants” each challenged by a culture of “disconnected” digital-kids (DOE, 1999; Prensky, 2001; Levin, 2002). Narrative inquiry thematically analyzes the experience of teachers on the cusp of Technology Integration (TI). …

Identifying Obstacles To Incorporating Ocean Content Into California Secondary Classrooms, Jennifer Stock May 2010

Identifying Obstacles To Incorporating Ocean Content Into California Secondary Classrooms, Jennifer Stock

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The ocean is the dominant feature on this planet that makes all life on Earth possible. Marine educators and scientists across the country have identified essential principles and concepts that define what an “ocean literate” person should know, but there is a lack of comprehensive ocean content coverage in secondary classrooms across the United States. In California, limited ocean content standards exist in the primary grades, and diminish in the secondary grades. The main purpose of this study was to examine obstacles for secondary (grades 6-12) teachers to teach about the ocean in California public schools. Interviews were conducted with …

Preparing California Public Middle School Students For Scientific Inquiry Into Environmental Issues, Gretchen L. Thompson May 2010

Preparing California Public Middle School Students For Scientific Inquiry Into Environmental Issues, Gretchen L. Thompson

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Skilled scientists in all fields of study are critically needed to begin resolving ecological problems resulting from human impact. Time is an essential element in creating a proper conceptual foundation and training should begin early in a student’s education. As of 2010, the California State Standards for Science for grades six through eight do not sufficiently address the importance of inquiry-based studies, limiting the scope of possibilities in public education. Studies show that middle school students build a deeper understanding of conceptual science and its application if they have opportunities to apply their knowledge through empirical activities. Multiple benefits, both …

Using Electronic Books To Increase Elementary Students’ Motivation To Read, Lauren Ashley Short May 2010

Using Electronic Books To Increase Elementary Students’ Motivation To Read, Lauren Ashley Short

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

One of the main challenges that elementary teachers face is developing a reading program that adequately meets the need of all students. Given that not all students learn in the same manner, it is imperative that teachers find ways to motivate and excite all students when it comes to reading. Research has shown that motivation for reading predicts reading achievement as it is reflected on standardized tests and in school grades (Sweet, Guthrie, & Ng, 1998). Forms of technology such as digital books, CD-ROM storybooks, and interactive software programs have been successful in both motivating students to read and improving …

Road To Equality In South African Education: A Qualitative Study, Kevin O'Brien May 2010

Road To Equality In South African Education: A Qualitative Study, Kevin O'Brien

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

South Africa is currently experiencing a crisis in its educational systems that if not addressed, could threaten the stability of the newly established democracy. A lack of access to quality education and severe shortage of skilled trained educators is perpetuating vestiges of the old apartheid state in the nation. Approximately 6,000 students graduate from South Africa’s teacher training programs each year to meet the demand of over 12.1 million learners (Evoh, 2007). This study examines the current crisis facing the educational system of postapartheid South Africa and more specifically how the LEAP (Langa Educational Assistance Program) school of Science and …

Practicing Democracy In The Nclb Elementary Classroom, Margaret H. Davis May 2010

Practicing Democracy In The Nclb Elementary Classroom, Margaret H. Davis

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The practice of teaching democracy in school is diminishing. The implementation of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) has forced teachers to teach to the test, and has required some to follow scripted curriculum, leaving little time or incentive for teaching democracy. This study examines the importance of practicing democracy and identifies ways in which it can be done in the NCLB classroom. The literature demonstrates the importance of teaching democracy through practice in schools. Ideas on how to accomplish this in the pre-NCLB classroom are well documented. By surveying public school teachers, this paper endeavors to bring awareness to its …

Postsecondary Education Preparation/Career Exploration: Designing A Pilot Educational Counseling Program For Rural Counties, Rajinder S. Gill May 2010

Postsecondary Education Preparation/Career Exploration: Designing A Pilot Educational Counseling Program For Rural Counties, Rajinder S. Gill

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

American students accustomed to standardization in secondary education have experience with fulfilling the requirements imposed upon them, but often these students require further assistance to facilitate their personal decisions about education after high school. Postsecondary education and career preparation programs, educators, and educational counselors can provide guidance to encourage student self-awareness and goal setting. A literature review was conducted to examine current best practices in educational counseling programs and to determine if self-assessments, including Myers-Briggs and Keirsey personality tests, Visual/Auditory/Kinesthetic (VAK) learning styles assessments, and Holland Hexagon (RIASEC) vocational preference inventories, have been administered to high school students as a …
