A Functional-Recognition Experiment In Spelling To Determine Extent Of Use And Mastery, James W. Hughes

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is any significant difference in spelling achievement on a fifth-grade level between an experimental group using a functional-recognition approach to weekly spelling lists for a period of four weeks, as compared with a control group which does not apply the functional-recognition approach, but which has equal time for study and writing.

The university presidents, as chief administrators of a complex institution, must deal with a variety of problems: buildings, money, organization, legal provisions, educational programs, and people. Campbell points out that school administration also deals with the values, beliefs, and feelings of people. Unfortunately, there is little assistance from research upon which the presidents can rely in dealing with the human elements involved in university administration, and to a large extent people are the crucial elements in administration. It is the purpose of this study (1) to compare the administrative handbooks for secondary schools developed in state departments of education to ascertain the policies and practices that a majority of the states prescribe for their secondary schools in certain major areas of administration; (2) to analyze the handbook for secondary schools of the State of New Mexico to determine the extent to which policies and practices in New Mexico conform or do not conform to the policies and practices followed by most of the states; and (3) to develop recommendations for revision of the New Mexico handbook in …
