An Analysis Of Educational Strategies Suited For Students With Asd, Quinn Ryan Jan 2022

An Analysis Of Educational Strategies Suited For Students With Asd, Quinn Ryan

Honors Theses

This paper will analyze several reasons why traditional educational practices are not well suited for students with ASD, and will explore multiple promising areas of research on mathematical education for these students. The project has several goals, which will be described in more detail throughout the rest of this paper. One such goal is to create a web resource for teachers that is designed to be suited towards students with ASD. The website will contain an overview of my research and analysis, as well as access to sample lesson plans. The purpose of the website is to bridge a gap …

Project-Based Learning In The Mathematics Classroom, Emily Gay Jan 2022

Project-Based Learning In The Mathematics Classroom, Emily Gay

Honors Theses

The literature is saturated with examples of project-based learning (PBL) in other fields (e.g. science, nursing). However, examples of PBL that are specific to mathematics are limited. Furthermore, often mathematics projects or problems were mislabeled as PBL when in fact they are ProbBL. Herein, I will expose and correct the misapplication of PBL; at the same time, I will explore its many benefits, including the factors that determine its success. I provide examples of PBL in mathematics. Based on the literature review findings, I have developed a mathematics unit that implements PBL using the necessary factors. The unit I wrote …

A Case For Collaboration: A Manual For Bringing The Collegiate Tutoring Model To The High School Level, Veronica A. Beaupre

Honors Theses

Colleges across the United States have peer tutoring centers designed to support diverse student bodies in their efforts to learn. At the surface level, peer tutoring provides tailored one-on-one instruction that meets the varied learning needs of a large learning community. In addition, peer tutoring has been shown to benefit not only the tutees coming to the center for assistance, but also increase the performance of tutors and change the learning culture of the rest of the learning community. As a powerful resource, the collegiate peer tutoring center model would greatly benefit high schools across the United States, who also …

Tablet Usage In Secondary Mathematics Education And Recommendations For Improving Its Effectiveness In The Classroom, Meghan T. Dwyer Jan 2016

Tablet Usage In Secondary Mathematics Education And Recommendations For Improving Its Effectiveness In The Classroom, Meghan T. Dwyer

Honors Theses

As part of my honor's thesis project at Assumption College, I have been researching the ways that teachers are currently using tablets in their secondary mathematics classrooms. My thesis compares the benefits and drawbacks of having tablets in classrooms, tablets for every student, or no tablets at all. In the spring, I collected survey feedback from mathematics teachers in four different local school districts. I analyzed the data in order to determine the ways tablets are being used in classrooms, the reasons preventing teachers from fully integrating tablets into their instruction, the impacts training has had on tablet use, and …
