The Kalamazoo Public Schools serve approximately 14,000 students in 25 schools. Located in Kalamzoo County, the Kalamazoo Public Schools District is one of the largest employers in the county as they have 1,400 employees. The Kalamazoo Public School District is operated by seven member Board of Education and supported by the people that reside within the school district boundaries.

The internship involved 240 hours working with personnel in Central Administration in the areas of public relations, personnel procedures and practices, organizational structure, curriculum development and regulations in special education, financial planning, contract negotiations and federal and state programs.

The purpose of this study was to seek answers to the following question: What is the present status of performance evaluation practices as perceived by student personnel administrators in Michigan four-year colleges and universities.

The participants, consisting of 25 chief student personnel administrators and 68 student service department heads, were surveyed by means of a questionnaire soliciting information concerning the existence of essential elements in their department head evaluation system.

An analysis of the data revealed 64% of the institutions surveyed had an established department head evaluation program. In addition, the majority of both groups observed their system as fair …

The objective of my internship was to become familiar with the role and duties of a K-12 school principal. I was exposed to a wide variety of experiences. Those experiences, through readings, personal interviews, and group meetings are the focus of my internship. My experiences included working with the Challenge Program, which is for the gifted and talented students, and helping to re-word some of the present job descriptions. I also assisted with the realignment of boundary lines and research on teacher evaluations. Absence policies and junior high level programs were also investigated.

Conflict management is a vital component of the manager's function. It is also assumed that men and women manage conflict differently, and therefore perform differently as managers. This assumption, along with many other sex-role stereotypes, has restricted the entrance of women into management, and especially into top level management.

This study investigated differences in the conflict management styles of men and women managers, and specifically of men and women administrators in 2-year colleges across the United States. It utilized the self-administered Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument to measure conflict management on five modes determined by the dimensions of cooperation and assertiveness. …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether certain characteristics of public school administrators are present which can be used as descriptors for other educators' potential for acquiring computer literacy from a specific staff development model. Procedure. Participants in the study were 44 public school administrators from the Northwest Education Region of North Carolina. The study was quasi-experimental, using a pretest, treatment, and posttest design. The treatment of the subjects consisted of six three-hour sessions of computer literacy training. The problem of this study was to determine if there were differences in principals' supervisory emphases and practices in school systems where the superintendent is appointed and in school systems where the superintendent is elected by popular vote. A total of three hundred principals was surveyed using a Supervisory Practices Inventory developed by Albert and Judith Canfield. The principals responded to questions about supervisory emphasis and practices. The supervisory emphases areas were people, tasks or results, paralleling those developed by Peter Drucker and George Odiorne. The other area of response was in supervisory practices. The purpose of this research was to determine the perceived importance of factors which comprised the major components of a leadership training program developed exclusively for female community college managerial aspirants. The study was undertaken to determine if any differences existed among six components, perceived by the participants as contributing to their career development. Comparisons were also made to ascertain if a difference existed in the importance of each of the components between those who have advanced in their careers since participating in the leadership program and those who have not advanced.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the types and degrees of state legislative political participation used by superintendents and their degree of education, their district size, their districts' geographic location, and the job they held prior to their superintendency. The instrument used to measure the degree and most effective type of political participation used by superintendents was developed by the investigator. This instrument was mailed to 226 of the 531 Michigan public school superintendents in K-12 districts with 214 responding.

This study examines students with diagnosed writing deficiencies who persisted (Group II, n = 350) and provided evidence of mastery of the subject matter in a "Mastery Learning" remedial English course designed after the Keller plan of Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Their subsequent achievement on three criterion variables--Grade in Freshman Writing, Total Credit Hours Earned over a Two Year Period, and Overall Grade Point Average--is compared with achievement of three other groups. The purpose of this study was to determine whether regular education teachers, when given an intensive training program in all aspects of special education, will be more at ease when teaching handicapped students and in turn have im proved attitudes when working with these students. The data for the study were collected in 1984 and 1985 using a researcher-designed instrument entitled Special Education Attitude Survey (SEAS). The proliferation of university educational demand in Nigeria occurred as a result of the oil boom and the subsequent creation of nineteen states. In 1974, Ibadan and Lagos Universities were the only federal universities; in 1976 seven more universities were created. The sudden increase, from two in 1974 to thirteen federal universities in 1976, necessitated the adoption of the formula funding model, which was perceived as being capable of allocating resources to all similar academic programs in the institutions. Shared Supervision, a model in which teachers could practice ITIP concepts, was developed by a group of middle school teachers. Fifteen teachers participated in the project. ITIP concepts were reviewed on a monthly basis by an ITIP trainer. The participating teachers observed one another using the reviewed concepts. The results showed support of a Shared Supervision Model for developing teaching skills. Conclusions and recommendations for Shared Supervision are discussed.

Student Rights: U.S. Supreme Court Cases-- Their Implications For And Implementation In Washington Schools, Angela Dawn Ramsey

The relationship between national litigation and state legislation was studied. Seven areas of student rights were used in categorizing Washington State's educational laws and policies, and twenty-three precedent-setting United States Supreme Court cases. The results showed support for the hypothesis that national litigation impacts state legislation in educational policy-making. Implications for and impact that this has upon the future are discussed.

This study examined the relationship of staff participation and desire to participate in the decision-making process of an organization to perceived job satisfaction and role ambiguity and overload of teachers in child development agencies. The study also included an investigation of the methods of decision making most often used by child development agencies to determine if there was a significant relationship between the teachers’ level of satisfaction in participating in decision making and the mode of decision making used in their organizations.

General and legal issues were researched as a basis to identify court attitudes and general public pressures. It was the purpose of this study to determine whether a bias toward female behaviors exists in the school environment that academically handicaps males and results in a higher ratio of males to females being placed in special education classrooms. In addition, the study examined the administrative implications related to sex-role bias and the ratio of males to females in special education classes.

The problem investigated was the degree of incongruence between the perceptions of nursing education administrators and nursing service administrators in regard to the educational preparation and employment practices for technical and professional nurses which has contributed to discontent in the profession. The population studied was nursing education administrators in AD and BSN programs and nursing service administrators in general acute care hospitals in West Virginia. The research method was a descriptive survey using a mailed questionnaire developed by a researcher. The purpose of this study was to examine fact-finding as a method of conflict resolution in Virginia Public School grievance cases to determine the extent that school boards and courts accept the fact-finders' recommendation.
