The Effectiveness Of Video Tape Monitoring Of Direct Instruction Procedures Across Teachers, John H. Cottrell

A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used to evaluate the effects of monitoring subject performance and providing feedback regarding the implementation of Direct Instruction (DI) procedures from video taped recordings of the subject's presentations of the DI lessons upon the implementation of those DI procedures. The subjects were two junior high school special education teachers who teach reading using the SRA Corrective Reading; Decoding B program. The DI lessons were recorded on VHS video tape and observational data were recorded during baseline. During intervention, a monitor also provided feedback on the subjects performance using examples from the video …

The objective of this study was to identify the specific areas of weakness and strength in the mathematics and reading programs of the Portage Public Schools in grades 4, 7, and 10, by isolating each of the skill areas and the specific objectives within each of those skill areas by comparing the scores of students in the Portage Public Schools with the scores of all other students in the State of Michigan for five (5) years (1980-1984). The major accomplishment of this project was the creation of cognitive levels of questions spanning Bloom's (1964) taxonomy of learning, fostering religious training in nontraditional class settings at Kalamazoo Christian High School, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Classes involved were business mathematics, health, and physical education.
Descriptors, i.e., key terms, were developed from teachers' goals and objectives. Descriptors were then checked in a concordance to help develop Scripture reference for question development. Weekly or biweekly, participating teachers and the curriculum committee were supplied draft sections of the project; they gave feedback relative to usefulness and acceptability.

The study is an inquiry into the influence of expressive writing practice on the transactional writing abilities of selected fourth grade students. It is based on the ideas of James Britton, an English theoretician concerned with writing. The study was formulated to investigate how the process of writing occurs. Writing research is at an early stage, and this study will expand the knowledge of the field.

The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of developing a decision support system--a set of computerized information management tools to collect, store, analyze, and report information--to aid in the selection of classroom textbooks. The study was designed to assess the economic, technical, and operational feasibility using a management information systems model. A textbook selection decision was regarded as a combination of both operational control and managerial control decision types, semi-structured in nature, requiring a wide range of data having specific information characteristics.

The State of Utah's Department of Education has developed an objective/outcome based education model, K-12 grade levels, based upon effective teaching research. The model components are 1) a core curriculum consisting of the basic elements essential for every student's educational program; 2) curriculum instruction based upon the mastery of educational outcomes at an appropriate level in accuracy and fluency, with a variety of options for learning; and 3) management systems which eliminate redundancy in the educational process. The need for teaching social skills, imagery, relaxation, and self-talk was studied and confirmed. Review and use of many of these curriculums revealed overlap among some curriculums, but none fully integrated skills from each of the diverse approaches to teaching social competence. The purpose of this project was to integrate a select body of information addressing social skills, self-talk, relaxation, and imagery into a developmental curriculum for use with children and adolescents.

Student progress toward an educational goal can be enhanced by the use of a curriculum containing both assessment and instruction. This project is such a curriculum based on the linear measurement items of the Brigance Inventory of Essential Skills. The careful sequencing and prevocational nature of this curriculum, along with its record-keeping forms, make it especially useful for special education. It is also available as a data disk for use with Apple microcomputers.

The purpose was to create a series of stories for children that deal with sexual and child abuse. The stories were written in Spanish and English. Special attention was given to make them relative to the Hispanic culture. Background research supported the existence of sexual and child abuse. Symptoms were listed and the rights and responsibilities of teachers to report suspected cases were identified. The use of creative fiction and bibliotherapy was suggested for prevention programs in an elementary curriculum.

Current methods of teaching business communications in the high school classroom are very traditional. By developing a business communications simulation, the traditional classroom has an additional dimension for practicing letter writing skills, as well as oral communications and human relations skills. The goal in this project was to change the traditionally taught business communication course into a more practical hands-on experience of what is done in an actual employment situation.

This curriculum was developed to assist elementary school teachers in the intermediate grades in the use of storytelling activities in the classroom. It is divided into four sections. The first two sections are addressed to the needs of the elementary students; they include activities that enhance the learning of reading, and activities that will enable the student to become a storyteller. The last two sections are directed to the elementary school teacher; they include various methods and ways for the teacher to become a successful storyteller. The lesson plans are designed for both beginning and intermediate students of German. Special emhasis is given to communicative competencies, such as: introducing oneself and the increase of student's awareness of cultural differences between the American and German culture.

This project consists of a series of twelve original stories that each incorporate 10-20 commonly used American English idiomatic expressions. A list of the expressions used is included with each story.· Each expression is defined and an example of its use is given.
Eight different activities that can be used to work with the stores are offered. Included are some techniques for teaching the students some important metalinguistical phrases. Finally suggestions are made to other teachers as to how they can write their own stories.

This paper provides an account of the development of the Southeast Asian Department of State Overseas Refugee Training Program's competency-based ESL curriculum. The author relates her personal experience as the curriculum, developer for the refugee program in Ban Vinai, Thailand in 1980 and 1981. The paper discusses the history of competency-based education and explains why a competency-based model was chosen. The paper concludes with a discussion of the principles that guide ESL instruction in the overseas training program.

The present work is an advanced reader for adult learners of Spanish. Each of its 21 passages highlights a features of the Hispanic culture or a constrast between North American and Hispanic culture. This paper attempts to explore the use of a computer in language learning. It describes twenty lessons that were given to a non-native speaker using a computer with the Language Experience Approach. It includes three hypotheses that were formulated before the lessons began, the rationale of how the hypotheses were developed, a description of the lessons, and conclusions. The paper lists difficulties that were encountered in the lessons as well as factors that helped learning.

The intention of this independent professional project is to present a way in which phrasal verbs can be taught communicatively. Included in it are five lesson plans which clearly illustrate ways in which this can be done. A grammatical analysis is also included as it is felt that students need to know some of the rules governing phrasal verbs to be able to use them correctly and effectively.
