The Digital Musing Of A History Buff, Charles W. Kann Dec 2016

The Digital Musing Of A History Buff, Charles W. Kann

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Perhaps the best part of studying Computer Science (CS) is that it is not an isolated discipline; CS exists to produce systems and applications that support the business and interests of nearly every person in the world. Any area of inquiry is open to fanciful and meaningful exploration by computer scientists. In a very real sense, the world is the oyster of those who can use digital tools developed by CS.

In his talk, Dr. Kann will explore how he uses those digital tools to advance his enthusiasm for history. The talk will highlight some of the work he has …

Maps And Distance In Geometry (9th-10th Grade), Catherine A. Davison Jun 2016

Maps And Distance In Geometry (9th-10th Grade), Catherine A. Davison

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

The purpose of this unit is to make mathematical concepts more concrete and real for students using maps. Students will be asked to think about mathematical objects through cartography or map-making. When teaching the formulas for midpoint and distance, I have found that more concrete understanding of the topic helps students to understand and apply the process for midpoints and distances. A distance between two arbitrary coordinate points is more difficult for students to grasp conceptually than the distance between San Antonio and Dallas or the distance from school to their favorite restaurants.

Students will begin the unit with a …

Students will learn utilization of maps and their elements. They will also learn about physical and human characteristics of communities. The goal of this unit is to help students understand that maps tell the story of a community and that people modify their physical environment to meet their needs. Through station exploration, map reading practice, creating digital maps, and exploring the local neighborhood, students with a variety of learning modalities will internalize the purpose of maps. Students transfer their knowledge and skills at the end of the unit by designing a community and creating a map to represent that community.

Maps And Mobilities: On The Possibilities And Limits Of Spatial Technologies For Humanities Research, Christopher R. Brennan-Horley Jan 2015

Maps And Mobilities: On The Possibilities And Limits Of Spatial Technologies For Humanities Research, Christopher R. Brennan-Horley

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

This paper explores the limits of spatial representation for understanding historic mobilities in a rural Australian setting. For this research, an historical GIS was populated from paper map archives denoting where and when bitumen roads were sealed in the Bega Valley, NSW. Using existing geospatial methods, a temporally sensitive network analysis was conducted, revealing a picture of regional mobility reshaped by modernist infrastructure improvements. Yet a straightforward binary pitting sealed roads as 'good' vs unsealed roads as 'bad' was challenged in subsequent qualitative interviews with long-time residents. Instead, a range of opinions emerged about the role that differing road surfaces …

Planning For Veterans’ Success: The Degree Map As An Advising Solution, Tracey M. Richardson, Jason M. Ruckert, James W. Marion Jr

Publications

Due to the expected influx of veterans attending college, it is critical that higher education not only be cognizant of the projected growth but also take a proactive stand and properly plan for these students’ success. Academic planning begins with advising professionals developing open communications and becoming equipped to guide veteran students through the matriculation process. Veteran students often have difficulty interpreting university scheduling and frequently have access to only a limited advising staff for course selection information, which may prompt some to not persist in an online degree program. This study’s findings suggest the degree map is a powerful …

Cooking Up Concept Maps, Abigail Hawkins, Jennifer L. Fabbi, P. S. Mcmillen

Library Faculty Publications

Concept maps allow students to visually work through an idea for potentially useful search terms.

A common roadblock students experience in the research process is identifying central concepts in their research questions and devising useful ways to reframe search terms. Concept mapping is one instructional strategy that can be used to help students better identify the central concepts in their research questions and expand on other ways these concepts are articulated in the literature.
