Draft: First-Year Composition Eportfolio Project As High Impact Practice, Jenni Keys
Workshops & Institutes
Abstract: The ePortfolio project will be the culminating formal writing assignment in a two-term course that completes students' first-year composition university requirement. This project fulfills three areas of ePortfolios as a high impact practice:
- Inquiry: Students seek and perceive connections between the course learning outcomes and the experiences in their first-year composition course in relation to their development as writers
- Reflection: Students identify and repeatedly reflect on their personal journeys as writers, answering the questions “what have I learned?” and “how have I grown?”; students consider those answers within the context of their continued experiences as university and life-long learners. …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
The ePortfolio as a High Impact Practice (HIP) was implemented to Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) course in Kinesiology during Winter 2020. Preservice physical education teachers enrolled in the course (i.e., KINE473 - Instructional Strategies for Physical Education) were required to create an individual ePortfolio, a framework for individual learning experiences to collect and compile evidences of learning experiences in the course of PETE program. The course, KINE473, is a senior level with extensive prerequisite courses for graduation and requirement to meet the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CCTC). Prior to graduation and preparation to advance to credential programs, ePortfolio …

Two different post-secondary professional education programs from two different cities (New York and Madrid) took a similar approach in using ePortfolio to facilitate high-impact behaviors (HIBs) among their students while showing how the ePortfolio enhances and supports other high impact practices (HIPs). In Madrid, ePortfolio was utilized to support a Matumaini Project as it integrated the academic work carried out in the classrooms to help a community in Kenya. On the other side of the Atlantic, the ePortfolio was implemented in order to connect didactic learning from the classroom to the clinical practice in the local community. Both case studies …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
The purpose of the Department of Nursing Master of Science in Nursing program portfolio requirement was unclear. To clarify the portfolio purpose and process, and to update from a paper to an electronic portfolio format, a detailed ePortfolio policy was drafted in the course of the Teaching Resource Center 2019 Summer ePortfolio Institute. Reflection prompts and a scoring rubric were to be finalized after approval of the policy. The policy was submitted to the Department of Nursing Graduate Affairs Committee for review and approval. Ironically, the discussion of the policy among Graduate Affairs Committee members culminated in a decision to …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Students are getting lost in University advising structure. Their needs are not being recognized by their faculty or professional advisors. A simple, easy-to-create personal web page completed during “first contact” sessions is a High Impact Practice that will create a bond between student and Faculty/Advisor and by extension the University. We hypothesize that a student-created profile page will provide academic advisors a much clearer snapshot of the student resulting in more informed advising and better student retention.
The student personal profile page consists of three sections and can be completed by the student in approximately 10 minutes. The profile is …

This article highlights a case study that assesses how graduate-level, in-service science teachers engage in an ePortfolio social pedagogy ecosystem to document their growth in knowledge practices and dispositions in information literacy. The ePortfolio social pedagogy ecosystem and this study are situated within the context of the Catalyst Framework. The three modes of interrelated social learning activities include: (1) authoring the written ePortfolio in an online ePortfolio digital media platform, (2) presenting the ePortfolio in the webinar platform, and (3) presenting the ePortfolio in- person in a physical setting. We used case study methodology to systematically investigate how each participant …

In an undergraduate as well as in a graduate academic setting, an ePortfolio is a collection of student work designed to exhibit student’s achievements, which often includes student’s reflective commentaries. While in academia ePortfolios are used to document the student learning process over time, they have been also well received by employers as work portfolios or showcases. This paper provides detailed explanations of two years of implementation of ePortfolio activities in junior and senior level engineering technology courses. The goal of the paper is to present to the community the best practices learned during the implementation and to provide information …

Developing Reflection Through An Eportfolio-Based Learning Environment: Design Principles For Further Implementation, Pauline Roberts
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This article discusses the implementation of an ePortfolio-based learning environment with Bachelor of Education students. The intention was for the platform to be an agency for the development of reflection. The environment scaffolded reflection through (1) exemplars of good practice, (2) the opportunity for discussions and (3) activities to support the development of reflection. There were issues within the research around the introduction of the platform at the particular stage of the students’ degrees but the environment was successful in the provision of a teaching and learning platform. The findings provided design principles for a model to guide the development …

Authentic Assessment Of Reflection In An Eportfolio: How To Make Reflection More Real For Students, Pauline Roberts, Helen Farley, Sue Gregory
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In a doctoral study that focused on the enhancement of reflection through an ePortfolio-based learning environment, students’ indicated that they felt reflection was not real when it was used for assessment. This led to an examination of assessment practices linked to reflection and ways to make it authentic. The literature revealed that reflection is often a component of authentic assessment rather than being a focus of it. The practices associated with the assessment of reflection are examined in order to formulate 4 guiding principles. These principles aim to make the process of reflection more ‘real’ to students in higher education …

Using The Eportfolio To Complement Standardized Testing In A Healthcare Professional Program: Better Education Or More Busy Work?, Clarence Chan
Publications and Research
This article evaluates the full-scale integration of the ePortfolio into a healthcare professional program in an open admissions community college in the United States. The Physical Therapist Assistant program in question struggles to balance the dynamic tension between preparing students for a summative multiple-choice licensing examination and the continuous development of professional core values such as altruism and integrity—qualities that cannot be measured by any standardized test. To address this conflict, the program has piloted the ePortfolio as a pedagogical tool that enables students to reflect on their development of professionalism and to make connections between academics, clinical practice, and …
