Online Versus Face-To-Face Communication Sciences And Disorders Graduate Student Outcomes: A Causal-Comparative And Correlational Study, Nicole Christine Shears Aug 2023

Online Versus Face-To-Face Communication Sciences And Disorders Graduate Student Outcomes: A Causal-Comparative And Correlational Study, Nicole Christine Shears

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative and predictive correlational study was to investigate how online CSD graduate students compare to their face-to-face peers based on three measurable student outcomes with an additional investigation of how their age impacts these outcomes. This study is important because the number of online graduate programs in CSD is growing despite a lack of evidence in the research that online programs in this field have similar student outcomes as their face-to-face counterparts. This ex post facto study investigated outcomes from 188 students who graduated from or were previously enrolled in a CSD graduate program from …

Executive Functioning In Language Learning Disabilities: Defining Executive Functioning, Executive Functioning Deficits, And Clinical Intervention Strategies To Support Children, Kaylie Trumble Oct 2022

Executive Functioning In Language Learning Disabilities: Defining Executive Functioning, Executive Functioning Deficits, And Clinical Intervention Strategies To Support Children, Kaylie Trumble

Honors Theses

This thesis aims to select a working definition of executive functioning (EF) to identify possible EF deficits and clinical interventions strategies to support children. Included are EF deficits, ways of assessing EF components, and intervention strategies for executive dysfunction in LLD. Scenarios are provided to demonstrate both matching strategies to a child and strength/deficit in EF, along with a sample intervention script.

A Comparison Of Conversational Recast And Milieu In Language Sampling, Riha Karney Jan 2022

A Comparison Of Conversational Recast And Milieu In Language Sampling, Riha Karney

Honors Theses

The purpose of this project was to observe the language and play abilities of two children and recognize the impacts of leading or following with different language interventions. Two preschool age children were selected and compared for these observations: one who has shown signs of communicative or social-emotional challenges and one who showed no such signs. For each child, information was gathered in regard to their behaviors and language during a play interaction with peers. In addition, two language samples were collected by the observer, one using the technique of conversational recast and the other using the technique of milieu …

Clinical Case Study: The Effects Of Real-Time Iemg Biofeedback On Facial Muscle Activation Patterns In A Child With Congenital Facial Palsy, Alyssa Molina Apr 2021

Clinical Case Study: The Effects Of Real-Time Iemg Biofeedback On Facial Muscle Activation Patterns In A Child With Congenital Facial Palsy, Alyssa Molina

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Experimental findings are limited concerning efficacious procedures for facial reanimation following persistent idiopathic facial paralysis or paresis. Additional research examining the use of real-time integrated electromyography (iEMG) biofeedback for young children with persistent idiopathic facial paralysis is one approach to further understand the efficacy of electrophysiology biofeedback techniques in facial reanimation for this age group and etiology. iEMG research has applications in interventions for pathology of nerves and muscles affecting animation of the face. The proposed clinical case study will adopt real time iEMG visual biofeedback to facilitate facial reanimation in a preadolescent child. Quantitative measurements will determine orofacial muscle …

Vibrotactile Threshold Estimation In Neurotypical Children, Elizabeth Hoffman Apr 2020

Vibrotactile Threshold Estimation In Neurotypical Children, Elizabeth Hoffman

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Experimental findings are limited concerning the vibrotactile sensitivity of the glabrous hand and perioral face in neurotypical children. Additional research examining vibrotactile detection thresholds (VDT) in neurotypical children would further understanding of tactile perception in children and help create a more robust understanding of somatosensory development across the lifespan. This research has applications in diagnostics for neurological disorders affecting vibrotactile sensation in the hands and face. The proposed study will use an adaptive single interval up-down threshold tracking algorithm to measure VDTs at 5, 10, 50, 150, 250, and 300 Hz for the glabrous hand and perioral face in a …

Increasing Phonemic Awareness In The Pre-School Aged Child: A Parent-Centered, Play Based Approach, Emma Hanzl May 2014

Increasing Phonemic Awareness In The Pre-School Aged Child: A Parent-Centered, Play Based Approach, Emma Hanzl

Honors College

Written as a reference for parents and both present and future early childhood educators, this compilation of studies and accompanying resources is intended to clarify misconceptions and build individual understandings of phonological and phonemic awareness. The relationship between phonemic awareness instruction and stronger reading and spelling abilities has been well established; however, most previous studies of phonemic awareness have utilized educators or trained researchers as the primary instructors and have focused mainly on school aged children ranging from preschool to grade three. The purpose of this review was to extrapolate the potential effects of placing parents in the role of …
