Education In The Time Of Covid: Bridging Inequalities In Access To Opportunities, Paulynne J. Castillo

In an attempt to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus, virtually all schools around the world were closed by the end of the first quarter of 2020. Following a brief hiatus, the majority of the countries opted to utilize variations of distance learning—as opposed to resuming face-to-face classes—to minimize disruptions in the education of the more than 1.5 billion students in 191 countries. In the Philippines, the remote education multi-modal approach took the following forms: the use of modules (Modular Distance Learning), radio/television-based instruction (R/TVI), and online facilities.

Lockdowns and “stay-at-home” orders, starting in March 2020, shuttered bench and field dependent research across the world as a consequence of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic continues to have an impact on research progress and career development, especially for graduate students and early career researchers, as strict social distance limitations stifle ongoing research and impede in-person educational programs. The goal of the Bioinformatics Virtual Coordination Network (BVCN) was to reduce some of these impacts by helping research biologists learn new skills and initiate computational projects as alternative ways to carry out their research. Dear Future is a children’s book that gives the main character Lucy, and our younger readers, insight into life during the COVID-19 pandemic through the form of letters. In the story, Lucy decides to question her mother about the pandemic after vaguely hearing about it throughout her childhood. Lucy’s mother was also not alive during the pandemic, but shares letters written to Lucy’s namesake and grandmother Lucille. The letters throughout the story are real letters written by 17 anonymous individuals about their current Covid experiences. Within the European Union all organisations and companies which process personal data must comply with the terms of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2016 which was transposed into law in 2018. GDPR provides fundamental rights to individuals relating to the protection of personal data, the terms for processing personal data and privacy of personal data. The regulation also requires both data controllers and data processors to take an active approach to ensuring compliance and to promoting awareness of data protection. As of March 31, 2020, the closure of schools in 192 countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic had resulted in over 1.6 billion learners being temporarily forced out of school buildings. New educational inequities arose, and existing ones were exacerbated. Acknowledging that disruption may also stimulate innovation, the purpose of this qualitative research was to identify possible improvements in middle grades teachers’ practices as they enacted emergency remote instruction. Through narrative responses provided to an online survey administered between May 27 and June 19, 2020, 332 middle grades educators self-identified aspects of their teaching practice that improved while teaching remotely. …

Refugee access to higher education is devastatingly low. Recognizing the complex barriers facing refugee learners, global educational initiatives are innovating flexible learning models which promote blended online and in-person learning modalities. This article describes the implementation of a five month, online-based internship pilot offered to 21 refugee participants in qualitative and quantitative research methods, through a participatory action research (PAR) framework in five different countries -- Malawi, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, and Lebanon. This study assessed the professional variables of academic staff in African varsities and their readiness to Utilise Internet-Based Channels for Research Communication in an era of Covid-19. Drawing from Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, the study was guided by four null hypotheses. The quantitative research method based on the virtual cross-sectional survey design was adopted. A total of 8,591 academics in African universities were the targeted demographic of this study. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in spring of 2020, like many educators, I experienced a definite disruption in the structure and plans I had designed for my courses. I was teaching a mix of graduate and undergraduate classes—some with as few as seven students, others with as many as 98, some upper-level skills-based courses, others in the broad general education arena, but all of them designed exclusively for face-to-face delivery. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant education disruption in Ontario. This has included mass and localized school closures, multiple models of educational provision and gaps in support for students with disabilities. The unequal distribution of school closures and pandemic- associated hardships, particularly affecting low-income families in which racialized and Indigenous groups, newcomers and people with disabilities are overrepresented, appear to be deepening and accelerating inequities in education outcomes, wherever data have been collected. Further, there are health risks associated with closures including significant physical, mental health and safety harms for students and children. A growing body of research and popular reporting shows racial differences in school modality choices during the COVID-19 crisis, with white students more likely to attend school in person. This in-person learning gap raises serious equity concerns. We use unique panel survey data to explore possible explanations. We find that a combination of factors may explain these differences. School districts’ offerings, political partisanship, and local COVID-19 outbreaks are all meaningfully associated with and plausibly explain the in-person learning racial gap. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic changed the landscape of healthcare, yet there is a gap in the literature concerning Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: To gather an authentic understanding of DNP prepared APRN experiences (stories) caring for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This was a qualitative narrative inquiry study. The study explored the several dimensions of eLearning used by Indian Higher Institutions and presented insight into current eLearning pedagogy, infrastructures, services, and perceptions during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The study's findings reveal that Indian Academic institutions are unwilling to shift to the online mode for teaching, learning thoroughly.
