Lifting Achievement Levels And Improving The Return On Australia’S Investment In Schooling : Submission To The Review To Achieve Educational Excellence In Australian Schools (Chair: Mr David Gonski), Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

Program monitoring and evaluation

Many students in our schools are not learning as well as they could because they are not being given learning opportunities at an appropriate level of challenge. Instead, students are grouped by year level (age) and teachers deliver curricula assumed to be appropriate for all students in the same year of school. However, the most advanced ten per cent of students in any year of school are five to six years ahead of the least advanced ten per cent. For less advanced students, the year-level curriculum is often too far ahead. Many are judged to be underperforming year after year, …

A Phenomenological View Of Teacher Efficacy As Experienced By Secondary Teachers Engaged In The Process Of Instructional Coaching, Shaftina Fiesta Snipes Oct 2017

A Phenomenological View Of Teacher Efficacy As Experienced By Secondary Teachers Engaged In The Process Of Instructional Coaching, Shaftina Fiesta Snipes

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological was to describe teacher efficacy in the lived experiences of secondary teachers actively engaged in the instructional coaching process. The theoretical framework guiding this study was Albert Bandura’s (1992) social cognitive theory as it expounds upon the role efficacy plays in human agency as it encompasses teacher’s individual beliefs and past experiences, as well as, the extrinsic motivations. Teacher efficacy, the confidence a teacher holds regarding their abilities to enact student learning, can be influenced by interactions with instructional coaches. Criterion-based sampling was used to select instructional coaches (n=2) and teachers (n=10) to participate …

Comparing Traditional And Year-Round Academic Calendars In Regard To Student Achievement In Two Virginia High Schools: Is There A Difference?, Gregory Scott Morin Aug 2017

Comparing Traditional And Year-Round Academic Calendars In Regard To Student Achievement In Two Virginia High Schools: Is There A Difference?, Gregory Scott Morin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study examined possible differences between a traditional and a year-round academic calendar with regard to student achievement in two suburban high schools in northern Virginia. This study’s importance derives from the fact that additional exploration is needed in order to more fully explore the potential loss of learned knowledge and diminished retention and recall of instructional material in students who experience an extended summer vacation period as part of a traditional school calendar. The purpose of this non-experimental, ex post facto, causal-comparative study was to test the theory of German psychologist, Hermann Ebbinghaus, called the spacing effect as it …

The Effect Of Technology On Student Achievement With English Language Learners In An Early Childhood Classroom Setting, Tiffany Vasquez-Dewein

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this action research project was to determine if there was a correlation between the use of iPads to improve student achievement and traditional methods of teaching with four and five-year-old English language learners (ELLs). Two control groups of four ELLs were taught in math three times a week. Control group A was taught using iPad applications to support math teaching in alongside traditional teachings in math. Control group B were taught with age appropriate early childhood materials such as counting cards and manipulatives to support the traditional teachings in math. Data was collected at the end of …

Authentic Intellectual Work And Student Achievement, Allison Robbins May 2017

Authentic Intellectual Work And Student Achievement, Allison Robbins

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Finding an instructional practice that works for most students in a classroom can be difficult. With so many different styles of learners, outside influences, and students coming in with different background knowledge, it can be hard to know where to start with some units. The purpose of this research was to use the framework of Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) to test if this would improve student performance. Two kindergarten classrooms were used—a traditional classroom, and a classroom that implemented Authentic Intellectual Work. Both classrooms consisted of 21 students. The students were assessed using state certified screeners in January and again …

Impact Of Student Learning Communities On Student Achievement In The Classroom, Sarah B. Nelson May 2017

Impact Of Student Learning Communities On Student Achievement In The Classroom, Sarah B. Nelson

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study is to show a correlation between student learning communities and success on academic standards. When students understand the process of learning, identify their goal and work to achieve this goal, they are more likely to succeed. Collaboration allows all members to be active participants for their learning and solve problems together. This skill is critical in school as well as in all aspects of life. In this study, students were placed into student learning communities based on their multiplication fact fluency. Students in each group determined their intervention, learned how to interpret data, participated in …

Dual Enrollment Student Achievement In Various Learning Environments, Bethany Arnold, Hal Knight, Bethany Flora Apr 2017

Dual Enrollment Student Achievement In Various Learning Environments, Bethany Arnold, Hal Knight, Bethany Flora

ETSU Faculty Works

The purpose of this study was to examine whether variations in student achievement in college courses exist between high school students who took the courses as dual enrollment (DE) courses and academically comparable high school students (AIMS scholars) who took the courses upon matriculation to college. Additionally, the researcher explored whether differences exist in DE course grade for students by course environment (online, face-to-face at a high school, or face-to-face at a college.) The researcher used final course grades as determinants of student achievement. The study focused on DE student and AIMS scholar grades in English 111, Biology 101, Math …

Does Grade Configuration Affect Middle School Students’ Achievement?, Katie Johnston Apr 2017

Does Grade Configuration Affect Middle School Students’ Achievement?, Katie Johnston

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review analyzes current and past research over middle school grade configurations. Many large cities are integrating sixth, seventh, and eighth graders into elementaries because they believe middle schools are ineffective. These schools cite a lack of student achievement as the cause to reconfigure building grade spans. The research to support this idea does not look at what takes place within these schools however. When the middle school concept is implemented with fidelity, research has shown students can succeed. Four characteristics commonly missing are having structures to support relationships and learning, providing services to meet needs of students, including …
