The Reciprocal Cycle Of Mentoring, Sherry Early Phd, Matthew Cooney
The Reciprocal Cycle Of Mentoring, Sherry Early Phd, Matthew Cooney
Leadership Studies Faculty Research
The leadership development encounter we want to share has been ongoing for nearly six years. I met Matt Cooney after he returned from a study abroad experience in Mexico. I was hired as an assistant director and Matt asked me-"Who are you and why should I care?" A bit brazen, but forgivable. Once I told him about my experiences and why I was hired it was like at first sight. Matt and I connected instantly. Things got even more intense when I was his instructor for his internship and he had to be accountable to me online.

Values-Based Ethical Leadership: Developing Leaders With Integrity, Sherry L. Early Phd, Kim Kushner
Leadership Studies Faculty Research
Values-based leadership and ethical decision-making are hot topics. However, the expectations and frameworks surrounding these characteristics are often unclear. The purpose of this article is to analyze values-based, ethical leadership by defining values and ethics, summarizing values-based ethical decision-making frameworks, and examining how leadership educators (scholars and practitioners) can develop students who lead with integrity.

My Professor Is Hot! Correlates Of Ratemyprofessors.Com Ratings For Criminal Justice And Criminology Faculty Members, Richard R. Johnson, Angela D. Crews
Criminal Justice Faculty Research
RateMyProfessors.com” ratings of the easiness, helpfulness, clarity, overall quality, and “hotness” of 407 criminal justice and criminology faculty members from across the United States were collected. Data were analyzed to determine what faculty characteristics determined these ratings. Experience working in the criminal justice field predicted higher ratings, while years of teaching experience was predictive of lower ratings. After controlling for instructors easiness and “hotness” ratings, the instructors’ ascribed characteristics (such as race and sex) explained the greatest proportion of variance in clarity, helpfulness, and overall quality scores. Professional characteristics, such as years of experience, publication rate, and possession of a …

Adult Learner Considerations In Admissions And Enrollment, Tammy R. Johnson, Sonja G. Cantrell
Adult Learner Considerations In Admissions And Enrollment, Tammy R. Johnson, Sonja G. Cantrell
Admissions Faculty Research
As national focus on retention and student success increases, many states and institutions are looking for ways to increase the number of students who ultimately earn degrees. Many are realizing that the non-traditional adult student population is a historically untapped demographic that can provide almost instant, positive changes in graduation rates. This group is often considered low-hanging fruit and can be targeted to quickly complete unfinished degrees. This is especially true for institutions that have a large number of non-completers with high numbers of earned hours. Many non-returners have 90 or more earned hours and simply need some encouragement and …

Record Book Of The Erodelphian And Diagnothian Literary Societies At Marshall Academy And Marshall College 1855-1861, Jack L. Dickinson
Manuscripts
This record book of the early debating societies at Marshall Academy and early Marshall College (Diagnothian Literary Society and Erodelphian Literary Society) is important for multiple reasons: (1) it is the earliest primary source on Marshall Academy (1855-1857) housed in the Marshall Archives that mentions student names; (2) it definitely confirms that there were female students at Marshall Academy before 1858; (3)it contains the only known three handwritten issues of the Marshall College Gazette (early college newspaper) for 1879. From the minutes of the debating societies we have extracted a student list for 1855-1857, a student list for 1861, and …

Use Of Wikis In Second/Foreign Language Classes: A Literature Review, Mimi Li
Use Of Wikis In Second/Foreign Language Classes: A Literature Review, Mimi Li
English Faculty Research
Wikis, as emerging Web 2.0 tools, have been increasingly implemented in language classrooms. To explore the current state of research and inform future studies, this article reviews the past research on the use of wikis in second/foreign language classes. Using Google Scholar and the ERIC database, the researcher examines twenty-one empirical studies published in fourteen peer-reviewed journals from 2008 to 2011. Specifically, the researcher takes a holistic review of this body of literature, including theoretical frameworks, research goals, contexts and participants, tasks and wiki applications, and research methods and instruments. The researcher identifies four main research themes investigated in the …

Empowering Advisors To Facilitate Change, Melissa R. Shehane, Michael Baumhardt, Michael E. Shehane, Sherry L. Early Phd
Leadership Studies Faculty Research
Advancing group dynamics is difficult. In order for students to learn, develop, and grow within an organization, they need to be empowered by their advisor to feel that their ideas and contributions are both important and valuable. This concept of empowerment means providing freedom for people to do successfully what they want to do, rather than getting them to do what you want them to do (Whetten & Cameron, 2011). As an advisor to a student-led organization, it is important to empower students to identify specific actions and strategies that facilitate change and achieve the outcomes of the organization.

A History Of Marshall Academy, Marshall College And Marshall College State Normal School By Virgil A. Lewis, Cora P. Teel
Librarian Research
This history of Marshall Academy, now Marshall University, is a transcription of typescript and holograph manuscript pages written by Virgil Lewis between 1910 and 1912, while he was serving as state archivist of West Virginia. Lewis, as state archivist, had access to sources, many of which are now unavailable to researchers. Of particular note are Lewis's complete transcriptions of the reports of the trustees of Marshall Academy to the Virginia Literary Fund (1839-1846), and his documentation of the years when the academy, later college, came under the control of the Methodist Episcopal Church South (1850-1858).
