Inquiry, Art And Consummatory Experience: A Deweyan Account Of The Instrumental And Aesthetic Modes In Human Well-Being, Eric A. Evans

This dissertation argues that a Deweyan reconstruction of philosophical theories of human well-being is needed. While philosophical interest about human well-being has existed for millennia, significant interest in such theories among philosophers has re-emerged during the past twenty-five years. During this same time there has been a resurgence of interest in the work of John Dewey. His critique of the “philosophical fallacy” is used to examine the legitimacy and value of the theories of human well-being offered by Plato and L.W. Sumner in which the target for evaluation is “happiness” and the criterion is, respectively, P-justice or preference fulfillment. It …

I am a music teacher in the public schools. This synthesis project presents a Practitioner’s Portfolio to convey my efforts over the last decade and more in pursuit of a rich culture of music in public schools. Readers should see someone who persists when faced with personal, pedagogical, intellectual, and institutional challenges. Moreover, that persistence is conducive of the serendipity through which opportunities open up to be an agent of change. Image Quality And The Aesthetic Judgment Of Photographs: Contrast, Sharpness, And Grain Teased Apart And Put Together, Pablo Tinio, Helmut Leder, Marlies Strasser

We examined the individual and combined effects of contrast, sharpness, and grain degradations on the aesthetic judgments of photographs depicting natural and human-made scenes. Our systematic approach demonstrated that certain degradations, and their combinations, had more impact on aesthetic judgments than others, and that the effects varied depending on the type of scene. We also showed that the degradations were additive in that the more degradations to which an image was subjected, the less it was liked. Finally, we found evidence for a contrast effect in which the aesthetic judgments of high-quality images were more positive as the images they …
