The mission statements of many institutions describe commitments to larger democratic purposes, including fostering student political engagement. Hundreds of campuses have sought to reclaim this mission over the past two decades. However, at issue is whether higher education is truly committed to this ideal moving forward; and if so, how to best to realize the ideal. Presenters will help attendees consider the ways to help foster a culture of student political engagement, based on findings from the study, A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy (2012).

Obtaining a PhD is a process filled with obstacles to traverse. As a Black man in the academy, learning to navigate these obstacles emanate with additional elements to master. This presentation explores the experiences of Black men at different stages in their journeys and how thriving during the first year was important to their stories of success. Participants will learn coping strategies, and faculty and staff who work with Black PhD students can learn ways to support their students.

Using a mix method approach, a pair of new professionals spent the summer on an assessment project

examining what factors lead to creating a culture of assessment within their Residential Operations

department. By reviewing the literature; interviewing higher education faculty, departmental partners,

and staff members; and surveying the department; the new professionals were able to create an effective

assessment training and provide departmental strategies that led to a standing workgroup to interweave assessment, evaluation, and research into the practice of departmental professionals. This project in

This paper describes the evaluation of high quality learning designs which are being selected for possible redevelopment in a National Project funded by the Australian University Teaching Committee (AUTC). The project focuses on “Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Their Role in Flexible Learning” and is evaluating over 50 projects with a view to developing a range of software tools, templates and/or guidelines based on those that are de emed to be effective ICT - based learning projects. Most colleges and universities with teacher training programs have collections of children's books. In many cases, the librarians who are responsible for selecting these books have a number of other responsibilities as well. The workshop for which this bibliography was prepared was designed for those busy librarians who are not always able to devote the time they would like to the selection of children’s books. It explored selected “best” picture books published during 2010 and 2011.

A review of Preisdent Richard Nixon’s deeds rather than his rhetoric or policy stances, illuminates a previously under investigated reality that Nixon’s education civil rights record has been the most progressive and beneficial for the education of students of color to date. How can this be? As this presentation will outline, Nixon’s rhetoric and stances on education were symbolic measures to appease both the ‘silent majority’ and conservative southern democrats, which Nixon identified as vital to his election aspirations in the 1968 presidential campaign. Within the context of an AUTC funded Project: Information and Communication Technologies and Their Role in Flexible Learning, this paper presents an analysis of learning designs using ICTs and how this grounded approach might be a more useful structure to design effective learning environments. The project has developed generic or reusable frameworks for technology-enhanced high quality learning experiences in higher education and this paper will present several examples, of the original design and how the key elements were selected and developed for use by others.
