Hitting The Wall, Bonnie D. Irwin

Bonnie Irwin

Much has been written over the last several years about the increase in the number of students who come to our campuses with behavioral disorders and under medication. While honors students are certainly not immune to these conditions, the more frequent emotional trauma we see them suffer is their first encounter with failure. Luckily, we can address this trauma successfully if we are prepared to do so. As honors faculty, we encourage intellectual risk, knowing from our own experience that failure may very well result but confident in the fact that learning also happens despite other outcomes, good or bad. …

We Are The Stories We Tell, Bonnie D. Irwin

Bonnie Irwin

As I approach my last hour of the presidency of NCHC, my voice will fade; it will become less prominent in the discourse of honors and our organization, and a new day will bring new stories into our midst. Yet my stories of our organization and our meeting in Phoenix will endure as I return to my campus, tired but enlightened, inspired to apply what I have learned and experienced over these four days. You each will do the same, returning home and telling your stories; by doing so, you will tell the story of NCHC. I study storytelling and …

Riding A Unicycle Across A Bridge While Juggling: The Musings Of An Honors Administrator, Bonnie Irwin Dec 2013

Riding A Unicycle Across A Bridge While Juggling: The Musings Of An Honors Administrator, Bonnie Irwin

Bonnie Irwin

My favorite metaphor for the life of an honors administrator remains that of a plate spinner. Those of us of a certain age remember them from the Ed Sullivan Show: frantically running from pole to pole, these acrobats had to keep the plates spinning so that none would fall crashing to the stage. Meanwhile, in the background, some classical, frenetic piece of music, often Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance, would be playing, faster and faster. Indeed, if a university can be likened to a circus—and many are tempted to do just that— honors administrators are the plate spinners.

Parents’ Experiences In The Transition Of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders To Community College, Edlyn V. Peña, Jodie Kocur Jan 2013

Parents’ Experiences In The Transition Of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders To Community College, Edlyn V. Peña, Jodie Kocur

Edlyn V. Peña

Due to the rising number of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) attending community colleges and the important role that parents play in their student’s transition process, the current study aimed to explore the experiences of parents as their student with ASD transitioned to community college. Eighteen parents of students with ASD who attended community college completed an hour-long interview regarding their experience assisting their student with the transition. Parents reported playing two predominant roles: (1) coaching students to navigate campus services, and (2) encouraging students to participate in college more independently. In addition, two major challenges emerged from parent …

Cognitive Science: How Do Deep Approaches To Learning Promote Metacognitive Strategies To Enhance Integrated Learning?, Mildred M. Pearson Dr., Daniel P. Harvey Ii

Mildred M. Pearson Dr.

This research will examine how deep approaches to learning assist students in developing meta-cognitive strategies to enhance integrative learning. Research was gathered through two surveys using mixed methods, a triangulational study. Student data consisted of questionnaires with adaptations from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) 2011. The faculty survey was a questionnaire with adaptations from the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE). Results reveals faculty measure success in promoting deep learning within and out of the classroom; the transference of new knowledge is obtained through writing intensive assignments, class projects, portfolios, collaborative discussions, undergraduate research, conference presentations, and self-reflections.

The Diversity Dialogue: Rethinking Pedagogical Practices To Provide Hope For Pre-Service Teachers, Mildred M. Pearson Dr., Samantha Cantu Jan 2013

The Diversity Dialogue: Rethinking Pedagogical Practices To Provide Hope For Pre-Service Teachers, Mildred M. Pearson Dr., Samantha Cantu

Mildred M. Pearson Dr.

This study examines how a diverse dialogue addresses cultural differences and social injustices and how cultural responsiveness helps teachers approach education more equitably. When teachers use a diverse dialogue, they are able to create a classroom curriculum that includes all voices, experiences, and activities and satisfies the needs of all learners. The study also suggests that teachers adjust their pedagogical practices to the ever-changing multicultural classrooms. Through an examination of best practices, teachers will be able to invest in more creative and diverse approaches that will not only benefit the individual student, but also the entire classroom. Applying positioning theory …

Too Korean To Be White And Too White To Be Korean: Ethnic Identity Development Among Transracial Korean American Adoptees., Joy Hoffman, Edlyn V. Peña Dec 2012

Too Korean To Be White And Too White To Be Korean: Ethnic Identity Development Among Transracial Korean American Adoptees., Joy Hoffman, Edlyn V. Peña

Edlyn V. Peña

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore how lived experiences affect ethnic identity development of transracial Korean American adoptees raised by White parents with the intent of informing higher education practice. Participants included 12 recently college-graduated transracial Korean American adoptees who were raised in the Midwest, rural south, and on the west coast. A theoretical model that surfaced from data collection is presented, demonstrating the complexity of transracial Korean adoptee identity.
