The primary purpose of this innovative professional development workshop (PDW) is to promote excellence in teaching by providing participants with ideas for effective and creative educational experiences in college and university classrooms and in the surrounding community environment. As an alternative to reading quizzes, a team of biochemistry instructors implemented student reading questions (Henderson and Rosenthal 2006) as a new instructional strategy within their large-enrollment biochemistry courses. Unexpected positive outcomes of this instructional method were realized, as well as limitations of the method within this setting. Outcomes and limitations of the reading-question strategy as well as suggestions for their more efficient implementation are discussed. (Contains 2 figures.)

It appears that our most pressing challenges in higher education require individual, departmental, and institutional change initiatives and interventions. Yet, institutional administrators, faculty, and staff, as well as business leaders, legislators, and community members often complain (and sometimes joke) about the insurmountable odds of successfully implementing and maintaining change of any type in higher education. Research and publication is an inherent value at all institutions of higher education throughout the world. Regardless of the motivation, faculty research fulfills a vital need for new knowledge generation. The purpose of the current study was to pilot test a survey instrument to evaluate factors that have an affect on faculty research at one public comprehensive four-year institution. The Business School in cooperation with the Office of Institutional Research created an instrument to track changes in faculty motivation and research involvement over time, with an emphasis on submissions and publications as effective outcomes.
