Inservice Teachers' Experiences In Intercultural Competence Professional Development, Kathryn Mcclintock, Heng-Yu Ku

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

The study explored eight inservice K-12 teacher participants’ experiences in intercultural competence activities and the cultural knowledge and self-knowledge they attained from participating in intercultural competence professional development. Data collection occurred through artifacts, reflection journals, and interview methods. The two themes that emerged for attaining cultural knowledge perceived by the teacher participants were (1) identifying commonalities and (2) understanding how the environment shaped them. The two themes that emerged for attaining self-knowledge perceived by the teacher participants were (1) identifying one’s values and principles and (2) recognizing cultural influences on biases. The pilot study outlined in this article aimed to explore the relevance and value of a strengths-based psychometric tool, Lumina Spark©, in a teachers’ education program. The study involved pre-service teachers from a Christian university and was conducted over a six-week winter teaching practicum. The psychometric assessment and workshop were designed to help pre-service teachers explore their personality and develop self-knowledge, social awareness, and stress management skills. The study found that the Lumina Spark© tool was effective in helping pre-service teachers understand their strengths and weaknesses and how they relate to others. This research aimed to reveal the effect of junior high school (SMP) students' self-knowledge, academic achievement, counseling and guidance service, school (SMK) image to their interest in continuing their education to vocational high school (SMK) in Magelang District. The population of the research was all of grade IX SMP students, with 387 students as samples. The data were collected using questionnaires and documentation and were analyzed using descriptive and regression analysis.
