Numeracy Tasks: Inspiring Transfer Between Concrete And Abstract Thinking Spaces, Taras Gula, Miroslav Lovric Jan 2024

Numeracy Tasks: Inspiring Transfer Between Concrete And Abstract Thinking Spaces, Taras Gula, Miroslav Lovric

Numeracy

In our paper we build a case for conceptualizing numeracy tasks as distinct from mathematical tasks (or at least as a special type of mathematical task), and for abstraction and interpretation as a set of key activities necessary for designating a numeracy task as being high-quality. We start with an attempt to tame the fuzziness of numeracy and its family members (including quantitative reasoning, quantitative literacy, mathematical literacy, and the word problem cousins) by outlining six areas of consensus gleaned from literature. These provide the foundation for a core mandate of numeracy. We then build our case for the distinctness …

What Can We Learn From The Different Understandings Of Mathematical Literacy?, Svein Arne Sikko Aug 2022

What Can We Learn From The Different Understandings Of Mathematical Literacy?, Svein Arne Sikko

Numeracy

Mathematical literacy, quantitative literacy, numeracy, matheracy, disciplinary literacy, and content-area literacy are among a plethora of terms used to link mathematics and literacy. In addition to this abundance of terms, the content of the terms is not precise, and in some cases the terms are used interchangeably. I delve into this landscape and dissect the meaning of each of them. From such an analysis of mathematical literacy, numeracy, and quantitative literacy, we learn about the importance of quantitative practices and elementary mathematics in society, including both how mathematics is necessary for everyday life but also how it can be used …

Using Data Mining To Explore Factors That Distinguish Between Students With High And Low Mathematical Literacy Performance — An Example With Socio-Economically Disadvantaged And Advantaged Students In Macao, Wa Kit Sou, Kwok Cheung Cheung, Man Kai Ieong, Soi Kei Mak Dec 2021

Using Data Mining To Explore Factors That Distinguish Between Students With High And Low Mathematical Literacy Performance — An Example With Socio-Economically Disadvantaged And Advantaged Students In Macao, Wa Kit Sou, Kwok Cheung Cheung, Man Kai Ieong, Soi Kei Mak

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

Using Macao-PISA 2012 data collected from socio-economically disadvantaged and advantaged students, this study identified two sets of important learning factors that distinguished between low- and high-performing disadvantaged students, and between low- and high-performing advantaged students, respectively. The findings of this research contribute to a better understanding of the reasons for Macao’s high-quality and equitable education as compared to other regions with high mathematical literacy performance while also revealing the crux of small inequities in its education system. The analysis method used in this paper provides a paradigm for data mining research using large-scale assessment data and helps researchers better grasp …

Literasi Matematis Dan Self-Efficacy Siswa Ditinjau Dari Perbedaan Kebijakan Sistem Zonasi, Ahmad Muhazir, Kana Hidayati, Heri Retnawati

Pengaruh Pendekatan Problem Solving Terhadap Kemampuan Representasi Dan Literasi Matematis Siswa, Muh. Fajaruddin Atsnan, Rahmita Yuliana Gazali, Maisea Ledua Nareki Dec 2018

Pengaruh Pendekatan Problem Solving Terhadap Kemampuan Representasi Dan Literasi Matematis Siswa, Muh. Fajaruddin Atsnan, Rahmita Yuliana Gazali, Maisea Ledua Nareki

Jurnal Riset Pendidikan Matematika

Jay P. Abramson and Matthew A. Isom. Literacy & Mathematics: A Contemporary Approach to Quantitative Literacy. (Dubuque IA: Kendell Hunt Publishing Co., 2005). 297 pp. ISBN 0-7575-2165-7.

The book under review covers the traditional content of a typical mathematical literacy text. After a brief overview of the book contents, the review then focuses on two specific challenges that QL textbooks have to meet: the timeliness of the contexts used and the subjective author voice that inevitably colors any contextualized discussion. Both issues noticeably arise in the text reviewed. Nonetheless instructors may find it a helpful resource.

What's In A Name? A Critical Review Of Definitions Of Quantitative Literacy, Numeracy, And Quantitative Reasoning, Gizem Karaali, Edwin H. Villafane Hernandez, Jeremy A. Taylor

Numeracy

This article aims to bring together various threads in the eclectic literature that make up the scholarship around the theme of Quantitative Literacy. In investigating the meanings of terms like "quantitative literacy," "quantitative reasoning," and "numeracy," we seek common ground, common themes, common goals and aspirations of a community of practitioners. A decade ago, these terms were relatively new in the public sphere; today policy makers and accrediting agencies are routinely inserting them into general education conversations. Having good, representative, and perhaps even compact and easily digestible definitions of these terms might come in handy in public relations contexts as …
