This simulation activity presents how elements of Man: A Course of Study (MACOS) can be implemented into the social studies classroom. The study investigated the effect of two cooperative learning strategies (the student teams-achievement divisions and think–pair–share methods) on students’ interest in reading comprehension. Seventy-eight senior secondary II students were randomly selected from three schools in Vandeikya Local Government Area, Benue State, Nigeria. A pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design was adopted. The Interest in Reading Inventory (R = 0.09) was the instrument used. Two hypotheses were tested at .05 levels of significance. Cooperative learning, once common on college campuses, lost favor with that population, and gained favor with K-12 educators. However, the academic achievement benefits remain and the focus on cooperation rather than competition appeals to adults. This manuscript argues that cooperative learning strategies are viable alternatives to the traditional lecture format that is worth considering. Whether the strategies occur throughout the entire class period or interspersed with a traditional format, the students benefit. The author explains how she uses cooperative strategies, interspersed with traditional format in a post-secondary setting.

The focus of this article is the journey two professors took during their implementation of cooperative learning with their teacher education students. It is the opinion of the authors that cooperative learning is a viable, yet underused, teaching and learning tool. Prospective teachers best internalize this methodology when they themselves are active participants in the techniques. The authors offer personal experience to assist in the readers’ understanding.
