Training And Instruction Of Learning And Study Strategies Improve Academic Performance In Rehabilitation Students, Evan M. Pucillo, Gabriela Perez

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Prior study has demonstrated that certain learning strategies can be improved with training and instruction. As a result, downstream academic success may be potentiated. However, it is unclear if instructional intervention can influence academic outcomes among rehabilitation students. The purpose of this study was to compare changes in grade point average (GPA) after exposure to a set of standardized self-paced training modules on the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) in Physical therapy (PT) and Occupational therapy (OT) students. Methods: A causal-comparative design was used, and a multi-center convenience sample collected N=75 entry-level PT and OT students [PT: 41(55%); …

Relationships Among Ethnic Identity, School Attitudes, General School Self-Concept, And Academic Achievement Of African American And Hispanic Gifted Students From Low-Income Families, Mihyeon Kim

SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness

Ethnic identity is a reflection of an individual’s own ethnic group membership and interaction with members of other groups. This study examined the relationship between students’ ethnicity, general school self-concept, school attitudes, and academic performance measured by self-reported responses. The sample was made of low-income, high-ability African American and Hispanic 7th and 8th grade students, N = 186, that participated in a residential summer academic program. A path model was proposed with four components to measure academic achievement: ethnic identity, school attitudes, general school self-concept, and self-reported GPA. The path analysis model explained 11% of the variance in …

The Qualitative Report

Serious problems occur in social life. In several cases in Indonesia, students often abuse their group collectivity and social relations with disciplinary behaviour such as following peer persuasion to spend much time hangout so that students neglect to manage study time, complete study assignments, and even be absent from lectures.. However, other students have managed to control unproductive social relations (persuasion to hang out during class hours, inducement not to do coursework, and others) to stabilize their academic performance with assertiveness. This explore student assertiveness strategies. At the same time, they were projecting strategic assertiveness protocols to maintain their academic …

Stable Or Unstable Associations Between Learning Environment Factors, Study Approaches And Exam Grades: Cross-Sectional Analyses Across Two Consecutive Program Years, Jenny Solveig Mygland, Gry Mørk, Linda Stigen, Astrid Gramstad, Trine Alise A. Magne, Tore Bonsaksen

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Studies into the relationships between learning environment perceptions, approaches to studying, and academic outcomes have largely followed cross-sectional designs. As a result, knowledge is sparse with regards to whether, or to what degree, the established associations are consistent across years of study. This study aimed to (i) examine associations between occupational therapy students’ academic performance, their approaches to studying and perceptions of the learning environment, while in their second and third years of study, and (ii) evaluate the consistency of the results across years of study. Occupational therapy students in Norway were assessed annually with regards to their perceptions of …

Does Homework Work Or Hurt? A Study On The Effects Of Homework On Mental Health And Academic Performance, Ryan Scheb

Journal of Catholic Education

St. Patrick's Catholic School is a coeducational Catholic preparatory school located in a large northeastern city. The school serves an exclusively non-white, working-class student population who demonstrates the motivation and potential to attend and graduate from college. The school’s mission calls for its staff to be guided by cura personalis, meaning they will care for the whole person; yet, data show that the school’s students were extremely stressed out and that much of their stress was attributable to homework. This study sought to determine if reducing the amount of homework could improve students’ mental health while not negatively impacting …
