Awareness Of Senior High School Students On Digital Literacy Skills: A Qualitative Study, Darwin A. Delima, Rejie J. Mamaril, Darren Rey Canlas Javier, Maica O. Dela Peña, Rafael F. Soriano, Kceylla Shajarrah Jid Ladjammah

Sinaya: A Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students

The current study investigates senior high school (SHS) students' awareness of the importance of digital literacy in times of uncertainty. Studies on digital literacy in DepEd Rizal have not been given sufficient attention. Hence, there is a dearth of studies showing whether students are fully aware of the digital literacy skills needed in distance learning. Consequently, an online qualitative survey gathered data from fifty (50) senior high school students presently enrolled in the different strands and tracks in the division. To better understand students’ awareness of the needed skills, thematic analysis of Braun and Clarke (2006) was utilized. Students' qualitative …

Historical Inquiry: Who Has The Power? Using Film To Introduce Students To Medieval Social Class Structures, Megan Todd, Janie Hubbard Nov 2022

Historical Inquiry: Who Has The Power? Using Film To Introduce Students To Medieval Social Class Structures, Megan Todd, Janie Hubbard

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Using film in the classroom to teach history has long been endorsed as an effective pedagogical method when the lessons’ purposes and goals are clearly supported with facts. This article, which includes a National Council for the Social Studies C3 inquiry-based lesson plan, is targeted for educators who aspire to help students understand basic European Medieval history and engage in critical thinking. Medieval history is listed in many U.S. state curriculum standards and international teaching benchmarks; thus, this lesson contributes a teaching-ready source, particularly to introduce students to historical concepts, geographies, and politics (i.e., power structures). Clips from A Knight’s …

A Pedagogy Of Consilience And Renewal, Carolyn Calloway-Thomas Oct 2022

A Pedagogy Of Consilience And Renewal, Carolyn Calloway-Thomas

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

This essay calls for a pedagogy of consilience and renewal as a dynamic fusion of research and practices in order to provide a more coherent way of examining some of the keen, interlaced variables that trouble the academy and society. The project challenges scholars to study five key scholarship of learning variables that should help transform the way we look at pedagogy for the betterment of North American society and beyond. The variables—a quintile—are knowledge, geography, critical thinking, civic engagement, and empathy.

Filling The Third Circle With Interdisciplinary Lesson Planning: A Case Study Of Pre-Service Teachers, Garrett Steede, Rebecca D. Swenson, Troy D. Mckay Oct 2022

Filling The Third Circle With Interdisciplinary Lesson Planning: A Case Study Of Pre-Service Teachers, Garrett Steede, Rebecca D. Swenson, Troy D. Mckay

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

The three-circle model of agricultural education focuses on the importance of in-class instruction, supervised agricultural experiences, and FFA involvement. The agricultural communications career pathway is available to students through agricultural communications supervised agricultural experiences (SAE) programs and career development events within FFA. However, specific curriculum that teaches agricultural communications in the classroom is not readily available. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the interdisciplinary lesson planning and integration process of pre-service teachers with focus on opportunities and limitations to teaching communication in the agriculture, food, and natural resources (AFNR) curriculum. In this case study, four pre-service …

Critical Analysis Of Critical Thinking, Jim Potter May 2022

Critical Analysis Of Critical Thinking, Jim Potter

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study provides an analysis of how the term “critical thinking” has been defined by authors of articles published in the Journal of Media Literacy Education. It provides answers to three questions: (1) How frequently is the term “critical thinking” mentioned by scholars who write about media literacy?; (2) In what ways do scholars convey the meaning of the term?; and (3) To what extent is the term presented with a consistent meaning? While the term “critical thinking” appeared in more than half of the articles examined, there was a great variety in the way authors presented their meanings …

Needed: Hits In Teacher Education Programs, Joseph Sanacore Apr 2022

Needed: Hits In Teacher Education Programs, Joseph Sanacore

The Reading Professor

From kindergarten children to graduate-level students, critical thinking is vitally important for personal and academic growth. Because today's world is saturated with all types of information, people--young and old--need the tools for determining what is true, "fake," or biased. Especially needed are teacher education programs that support higher interactive thinking skills (HITS) for undergraduate and graduate students. Whether they are preparing for student teaching or engaged in classroom practice, education majors benefit from gaining insights about critical thinking so they can nurture this growth in the children and adolescents who are entrusted to them. Fortunately, professional literature and evidence-based practices …

Using The Unfolding Case Study To Improve Clinical Reasoning, Greg Williams, Sara L. Nottingham Mar 2022

Using The Unfolding Case Study To Improve Clinical Reasoning, Greg Williams, Sara L. Nottingham

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Context: When authentic clinical experiences are unavailable, instructors may need to consider alternatives for evaluating clinical reasoning. Objective: Describe an educational technique that simulates clinical experiences to allow students to demonstrate clinical reasoning. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic created a situation where providing clinical experiences became impossible. Yet, students still needed to exercise clinical judgement as part of their athletic training education program. The unfolding case study technique aligns well with Kolb’s Theory of Experiential Learning and can be used to help students improve clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills. Description: An unfolding case study was used to …

Critical-Thinking Experiences Of Chinese And U.S. College Students: A Comparative Analysis Using Phenomenology, Lu (Wendy) Yan Mar 2022

Critical-Thinking Experiences Of Chinese And U.S. College Students: A Comparative Analysis Using Phenomenology, Lu (Wendy) Yan

The Qualitative Report

In this study, I investigated the critical-thinking experiences of seven Chinese international and five U.S. students attending a large public university in the United States. I conducted a comparative analysis of these groups’ different experiences with critical thinking in this context, while closely following the twin methods of epoché and reduction in phenomenology to remain attuned to any personal biases. My results indicated that Chinese and U.S. students experienced critical thinking differently on the basis of the four universal existentials noted by van Manen (2016): lived experiences of relation (self–other), materiality (things), time, and space/place. Specifically, the Chinese students tended …
