Highlander Center: Hotlines And Cultural Bazaars, Je Naé Taylor

Since the pandemic’s arrival,Highlander has created specially tailored on-line community-building spaces, programs, and re-granting opportunities for artists working at the intersection of cultural production and social change. This report documents two examples. The first is a “Cultural Workers Hotline” for BIPOC artists to share struggles, needs, and strategies for (a) coping with the impact of the pandemic on their livelihoods and (b) creating change-oriented artistic responses to the pandemic in their communities. Highlander staff have held multiple weekly virtual spaces for all of our programs, and each gathering has employed an artist to be a graphic note taker. Illustrations are …

We come as two artists, one a poet and dancer, Celeste Nazeli Snowber, and the other a visual artist, Marsha Nouritza Odabashian to excavate, reclaim and celebrate our Armenian identities. This offering is a collaboration of poems and visual images which sing a song deep in our bones and cells. Through colors, words, hues, and textures we hearken back to what has been in us all along. We offer it to you as a place to know that cultural identities live within the skin in all their paradox, glory and mystery.

Learning through and in partnership with the arts has the potential to expand experiences beyond what can be measured on any standardized test assessment. The arts may offer sites of reflexive contemplation and engagement, extending learning outward, away from disciplinary silos and toward transdisciplinary action learning—a heuristic device enabling multiple modes or processes of multitextual knowing and becoming. In The Role of the Arts in Learning: Cultivating Landscapes of Democracy, the editors nurture a space of consideration toward democratic learning. The arts give clarity to their emotions, situations, questions, and lives. Students experiencing all the arts gain a comprehensive perspective. Lyndon B. Johnson observed: “(I)t is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation.”
