In spring 2015, Melissa Evens, Director of the Undergraduate Communication Studio at Krannert, asked Shannon Kane to design an activity to be showcased at Purdue’s Annual Spring Fest. Having been given quite a bit of creative freedom, she hoped to develop an event that would not only create awareness of management careers among the local youth, but also encourage Krannert undergraduate students to become more involved in the local community. We are the Geospatial Information Systems Club from Texas A&M University - Commerce in Commerce, TX. Over the past year, we have cultivated an incredible community of researchers, data analysts, programmers, and writers to make our club one of the top academic clubs on our campus. Our first project even won a first place award. How did we do it? We used Foss4G software. This paper seeks to examine grief and despair as entry points toward compassion and environmental renewal. When sharing our own stories of grief and healing we access our deep roots as communities of interconnected Beings and find our way to Active Hope. Ecological grief plays a critical role in the environmental destruction of our time and by interrogating our own death denial and despair paradigms through communal story- sharing we can move away from apathy and toward more impactful environmental education. In the winter of 2015, the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) co-curated an exhibition with the loose-knit mobile photography collective known as JJ Community. #MobilePhotoNow included images created in response to a series of prompts and shared on the photo sharing and social networking application Instagram®. The exhibition reflected a community-based curatorial practice (Keys & Ballengee-Morris, 2001) demonstrating new possibilities for participatory art and culture in the age of social media. Journal of Catholic Education
Students participating in sustained community service at an urban Catholic and Marianist university were volunteer informants in this qualitative exploration of the meaning they make of their service experiences. A PhD student research team (nine members) interviewed fourteen undergraduate students (eleven of whom were seniors). Findings were organized as themes constructed within three domains: background, experience, and meaning. Within “background,” students who had prior work in faith-based service before college deepened their meaning of service. Within “experience,” there were social and cultural dynamics of navigating on and off campus life, including the roles students played as well as the challenge …

Access, Achievement, And Academic Resilience: The Relationship Between Avid And Black Student Participation In Advanced Placement Courses, Jemimah Lea Young
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the AVID program and Black student Advanced Placement (AP) participation. Academic resilience was operationally defined in this study as the ability of a student to successfully complete advanced placement or international baccalaureate courses despite academic risk factors. This study hypothesized that a relationship exists between the participation of Black students in the AVID program and AP course completion. The participants were 9th grade Black students (N = 2,267) that participated in the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009/2012 (HSLS:09/12).
