First 100 Days Persistence-Retention Plans, Kenneth W. Borland Jr.
Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education
Taking environments, persistence-retention, and social capital theories to the individual student as the level of analyses, and placing them within a “First 100 Days” strategy of prioritized urgency and energy as utilized by presidents of the United States since Franklin D. Roosevelt, the author challenges broad-based, long-term approaches to student persistence and institutional retention of students. A framework for “First 100 Days” persistence-retention plans for improved student and institution success is outlined.

The Influence Of Balance Within The Competing Values Framework And School Academic Success On Teacher Retention, Charisse Gulosino, Louis Franceschini Iii, Portia Hardman
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
The primary aim of this study is to use the survey items from the TELL Tennessee Survey (2013) using the Competing Values Framework (CVF) to determine whether teachers' observations about a set of topically organized school climate dimensions and school performance levels are associated with their immediate professional plans. Using a three-by-two-level Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), we find that the effect of CVF “balance” and school performance level explain much of the variation in the percent of teachers who intend to stay at their current school, independent of the school’s student demographic characteristics. Specifically, the effect of having a balanced …
Friendships And Retention At A Historically Black University: A Quantitative Case Study, Mondrail Myrick, John A. Gipson Jr, Donald Mitchell Jr.
Friendships And Retention At A Historically Black University: A Quantitative Case Study, Mondrail Myrick, John A. Gipson Jr, Donald Mitchell Jr.
Journal of Research Initiatives
The retention and graduation rates of underrepresented minority, first-generation and low-income college students persist as problems in U.S. higher education. While researchers have documented the ways in which minority-serving institutions have been successful in serving these students, little is known about how friendships influence retention at these institutions. This study examines retention factors of first-year students who began college with close friends at a historically Black university. The researchers used exploratory factor analysis and binary logistic regressions to determine the factors and significance. In addition, the researchers used linear structural relations to estimate hypothesized causal models. Results of the study …
The Stem Pipeline: Recruiting And Retaining African American Female Engineers, Delores Rice
The Stem Pipeline: Recruiting And Retaining African American Female Engineers, Delores Rice
Journal of Research Initiatives
The purpose of the study was to examine the career experiences of African American female engineers and explore their challenges and support systems during their career development. This qualitative study utilized a life history approach and was designed using basic interpretive inquiry. There were nine African American female participants in the study who currently worked in an engineering field within an engineering industry. Using an ecological model to ground the study, the findings were categorized as macrosystem (environment) or microsystem (individual) factors. The highlight of this manuscript includes a focus on implications, which offer insight into recruiting and retaining African …

Politics is a term often frowned upon as it pertains to the role of an academic leader. However as chair for almost 29 years it has become an essential yet sometimes unwanted aspect of the daily rigors of the position. This session explores the advantages and pitfalls of “playing politics” as a department chair.
