ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

This edition of AJCE brings together discussions on the various roles and effectiveness of research and community engagement programs in strengthening local identity, developing skills, and enhancing quality of life towards a resilient society. Expanding such roles, this issue consists of four research articles, one review article, and three case-based articles. The authors of this edition emerge from the background of language, engineering, economy, policy, education, and health, providing different outlooks and methods in overseeing the processes of community-related programs.

Relations Between Community Engagement Levels And Citizenship Competence Among Tertiary-Level Students At A Public Institution Of Higher Education, Ernesto L. Bastida Jr.

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

This mixed-methods sequential explanatory study seeks to explain the relationship between community engagement and citizenship competence among tertiary-level students at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas, a public institution of higher learning in Dasmariñas in Cavite, Philippines. Specifically, it seeks to (1) determine students’ level of engagement in various community development activities and their levels of citizenship competence; as well as (2) discuss and analyze the relationship between these two variables. Quantitative surveys were conducted on 331 students, followed by semi- structured interviews and focus group discussions with 30 purposely selected participants to gather follow-up data during the qualitative phases.

This paper discusses an educational activity program for the indigenous people of Bajo in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, aiming to improve parenting knowledge among young mothers. It addresses issues related to their identity as indigenous people, their self-esteem, and their way of upbringing of children. The issue of low self-esteem among the Bajo community often leads to adverse effects on their learning motivation, future orientation, and exclusivity, particularly in children. The current AJCE edition brings together meaningful discussions of community engagement programs as ways to disseminate various skills towards better society livelihood, focusing on product-making skills, women-led soft skills for families, and marketing skills. To raise awareness and understanding of maternal and children’s health, a team from Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, Indonesia, conducted a program called Tinggi Cerdas. It is a community development program in Kampung Lio, Depok, West Java. This article evaluates the impacts of activity related to the participant’s awareness and knowledge about maternal and children’s health. This study investigates the early formation and historical development of student service-learning in Indonesia from a global context. Employing a qualitative approach, it utilizes archival research methods for examining the inception of student service- learning, a community empowerment program conducted by the students in the country. It analyzed international documents sourced from Google Books archives, which are available through various online platforms and supplemented by the use of Google Ngram Viewer. This study explores the do-it-yourself (DIY) project in an urban context, a candle making with recycled used cooking oil (UCO), aiming to empower housewives in Gaga Village, Tangerang, Indonesia. UCO, a household waste material, becomes a trigger for this project because it pollutes the environment and reduces soil fertility if discarded unresponsible. In this scenario, involving the participation of urban housewives can be a way to address this issue.
