An Awareness Of What Is Missing: Four Views On The Consequences Of Secularism, Rachel E. Hunt Steenblik, Heidi Zameni, Debbie Ostorga, Nathan Greeley
An Awareness Of What Is Missing: Four Views On The Consequences Of Secularism, Rachel E. Hunt Steenblik, Heidi Zameni, Debbie Ostorga, Nathan Greeley
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
While the issues regarding widespread secularization in contemporary Western culture are difficult to properly assess, it can be argued that certain prerequisites are necessary for the well-being of any society and, furthermore, that certain of these necessary conditions are only provided by a given civilization's major religious tradition. All societies need to perpetually engage in collective action and decision making, and as any given community faces the challenges of the future, its governing religious worldview is an indispensable source of guidance and time-honored wisdom. With this in mind, it will be argued that Western civilization is dependent upon a Judeo-Christian …

Ever Learning, Ever Loving: Augustine On Teaching As Ministry, Ronnie P. Campbell Jr.
Ever Learning, Ever Loving: Augustine On Teaching As Ministry, Ronnie P. Campbell Jr.
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
While most remember Augustine (354-430 AD) as theologian, exegete, and philosopher, the purpose of this essay is to consider Augustine’s legacy and ministry as teacher. After his conversion (386 AD), Augustine’s views on teaching took a turn. His theological convictions thus set the course for his views on teaching throughout the rest of his life. It is to such views on teaching that this essay seeks to examine. Therefore this essay will wrestle through Augustine’s views on the role of the teacher and the learner and the link between the two, his theological basis for teaching, and some of the …
Teaching Technical Engineering Courses From A Christian Perspective: Two Examples, Charles C. Adams
Teaching Technical Engineering Courses From A Christian Perspective: Two Examples, Charles C. Adams
Pro Rege
Engineering professors, like those of the natural sciences, usually teach by breaking the subject matter into parts, that is, courses and activities that are logically abstract from each other. While together comprising a coherent whole, those individual parts too easily foster abstractionism, the view that such subjects as calculus, fluid mechanics, engineering design, and engineering ethics “really are” separable from one another. Such a view militates against a Christian perspective of engineering, technology, and reality in general by replacing the organic wholeness of life before the face of God with the compartmentalization that is characteristic of modern science and naturalism. …

Exposing The Roots Of Low Self-Efficacy For Math: A Multi-Case Study Of Students In An Urban Middle School, Joshua Emmett, Daniel Hall, Corey Mckenna
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This multi-case study of historically low-performing 7th grade students in a math class at an urban middle school employed a theoretical framework based upon Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory to discover the causes of low self-efficacy for math. The study utilized a cross-case analysis of four students who demonstrated varying degrees of self-efficacy. To serve students similarly situated, Christian teachers need to know what these students are experiencing and an understanding of the causes of low self-efficacy can inform their professional practice. Christian teacher educators can also benefit from understanding the context into which teachers of such students will serve so …

Teaching English as a Second Language is a broad field with programs designed to teach students from all languages and cultures around the world. Currently, the field is facing an urgent need for qualified teachers and leaders due to increasingly high numbers of immigrants and refugees. To meet this challenge, universities must have a plan for adequately preparing teachers to work with the growing population of non-native English learners.
Creating these programs require an understanding of ways to support English learners academically, linguistically, and culturally as they transition into English speaking schools. Based on the need for support, this article …
Doing Impacting Being: A Case Study Of Service Learning As A Method Of Faith And Learning Integration, Calvin G. Roso
Doing Impacting Being: A Case Study Of Service Learning As A Method Of Faith And Learning Integration, Calvin G. Roso
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
C. S. Lewis argues that Christians become more like Christ by practicing to be something they are not: “Pretense leads up to the real thing . . . very often the only way to get a quality in reality is to start behaving as if you had it already” (Lewis, 1952, p. 160). Likewise, educators indicate that when students practice and apply their learning “true understanding is demonstrated” (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006, p. 67). Even Jesus, the Master Teacher, modeled experiential integration in training His disciples (Matthew 10:1-15; Luke 9:1-6; Mark 6:7-13). Doing impacts being—what we do and experience shapes …

The Teacher As Servant-Leader, David W. Anderson
The Teacher As Servant-Leader, David W. Anderson
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Any Christian philosophy of education must begin with acknowledging God to be the Creator of all that is, and as the source of all Truth. All knowledge is derived from, or in some way related to, the Creator God. Three elements that inform our understanding of education are:
- our having been created in the image of God;
- the creation mandate; and
- the principle of stewardship.
The fact that humans are created in the image of God (Ge 1:26-27) sets the stage for our educability. Essential to our understanding of that image are such attributes as language (communication), reasoning, imaginative and …

Challenges Of Postmodern Thought In Christian Higher Education Institutions: Implications For Ethical Leadership, Dean A. Darroux
Journal of Applied Christian Leadership
"The study investigated the question: What is the process that Christian higher education administrators and faculty members used when understanding the challenges of postmodern thought at the institutions, and what are the challenges for ethical leadership? Utilizing a grounded theory methodology, the researcher sought to develop a theory that examined how fifteen Christian higher education administrators and faculty understood the challenges of postmodern thought at their institution and determined what were the implications for ethical leadership. The findings of this study revealed the following theory: The study identified six categories that served as the framework for understanding the process Christian …

Preparing For The Crossfire: Equipping Evangelical Leaders For Service In Public Schools, Gary F. Sehorn Dr.
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This article addresses the preparation and support needed by evangelicals who serve as administrators and teacher leaders in public school settings. Educational leadership is lonely, demanding, and draining. This article explores the unique challenges evangelical leaders face because of the ongoing conflict between conservative Christians and public schools. Work-related conflicts that evangelicals experience in the workplace due to faith and the cultural dynamics that fuel this conflict are described. Strategies are proposed for Christian colleges and universities to prepare school leaders for the cultural crossfire.

Anderson, D.W. (2012). Toward a theology of special education: Integrating faith and practice. Bloomington, IN: Westbow Press. ISBN: 978-1-4497-7249-9
Those who have read David Anderson’s earlier works will recognize that he has devoted his career to developing what might be referred to as a “theology of disability” or a “hermeneutic of special education” (p. 225). His book, Toward a Theology of Special Education: Integrating Faith and Practice, is a comprehensive treatise on what it means to approach the work of a special educator through an explicitly Christian worldview lens.

Achieving An Ethnically And Racially Diverse Student Population In Higher Education, Christie Curtis, Alexander Jun
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
Leaders in higher education continue to pursue the lofty goal of diversifying their college and university environments. Although improvements are evident in larger percentages of racially and ethnically diverse students and faculty on campuses, college and university leaders have much work left to do. The benefits associated with diversifying higher education environments have yet to be fully achieved. This article provides an overview of the diversity issue and identifies its importance not only to the welfare of those invested in higher education but also to the health and well-being of all people groups, nationally and globally. To illuminate the current …
The Role Of Christian Higher Education In The Promotion Of Restorative Justice, Steve Winterberg
The Role Of Christian Higher Education In The Promotion Of Restorative Justice, Steve Winterberg
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
This paper discusses the unique role of Christian higher education in the promotion of restorative justice within the criminal justice system and other systems of discipline. Christian higher education should integrate a faith that is active with all areas of knowledge, producing students who are promoters and practitioners of justice in every area of their lives. Restorative justice provides an opportunity for Christian higher education to live out the purpose of establishing the biblical concept of shalom, which is a peace that requires justice, restored relationships, and responsibility. A critical pedagogy allows for variations in practice, which leads to methods …
Western Philosophical Conceptions Of Justice, Eric Twisselmann, Fred Ramirez
Western Philosophical Conceptions Of Justice, Eric Twisselmann, Fred Ramirez
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
Attempting to survey the various Western philosophical conceptions of justice leading up to recent educational theory within a few pages is a daunting endeavor, to put it mildly. To this end, we will embark on a very brief survey of several key philosophers within the Western tradition, emphasizing with broad brushstrokes the major themes that each have contributed to our current conceptions of social justice. Through this survey, we shall keep a special eye on points of intersection and divergence from a Christian conception of justice in the hope that we can enrich our own tradition with greater understanding and …

Justice, Spirituality, And Education: Working Definitions From Secular, Judeo-Christian, And Biblically-Based Perspectives, June Hetzel, Rachel Beck
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
The issue of justice and social justice has been and still is a controversial topic in society today. A struggle exists both to define and to enact it. The same can be said of the concepts of spirituality and education. The concepts of justice, spirituality, and education intersect in community responsibility, the topic of this journal. A brief examination of the secular, Judeo- Christian, and Biblical definitions of the terms justice, spirituality, and education lends insight, not only into how communities compare and contrast one another in their working definitions of these terms, but also serves to identify commonalities and …

Do National Curricular Standards Ensure Educational Equity?, Albert Cheng
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
On June 2, 2010, new national curricular standards in math and language arts, called the Common Core State Standards, were released by the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers. As of November 4, 2011, all but four U.S. states have adopted and already begun to implement the new standards in their primary and secondary schools. These developments have become a key subject of widespread debate in the education policy arena. Proponents of the Common Core State Standards argue, in particular, that establishing a single set of national standards is necessary in order to ensure educational equity: …

I have been contemplating my Sunday church service, where the meditation was based on finding peace even in times of productivity, from Philippians 4:6-9. As our academic calendars change gear and progress to a difference pace, giving us space for more peace that may allow more meditative reading, I invite you to join with me in reading our Summer Issue 8(2) of the ICCTE journal. Already, we are receiving and processing manuscripts for our Fall Issue. God has been good to us.
