Early childhood educators serving children ages birth through 8 years seek to continuously improve the quality of the learning environment and curriculum practice. All 50 states created a Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS) to assess childcare center program quality and provide coaching for teachers. Early childhood education programs with intentional coaching score higher on several measures of quality associated with better child outcomes. Research demonstrates that there is a gap in understanding the relationship of coaching to quality scores within one Northcentral state’s childcare centers. The construct of educational accountability formally originated in 2001 as a means to improve education standards by holding teachers accountable for student academic progress; however, the definition of educational accountability for parents continues to be illusive. The purpose of this generic, qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of educational accountability among single, African American mothers of high school-aged children. Literature examining the impact of the student learning accountability movement on faculty perspectives is insufficient, as little is known about how faculty perceive the requirements related to federal, state, and institutional accountability initiatives. This case study investigated the threat posed by the accountability movement on the stability of faculty engagement, while exploring how faculty perceptions of the movement will impact institutional and state policy. Since the development and implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2002, educators have received pressure from local, state, and federal policyholders for students to achieve academically and for schools to make adequate yearly progress to avoid state and federal sanctions. The purpose of this study was to examine educators' perceptions of the effects of high-stakes testing and the accountability policies in high poverty and low poverty schools.
