Strengthening The Partnership Between Academic And Student Affairs, Jacqueline Cetera, Adrienne Jensen-Doray, Katherine Furlong
Strengthening The Partnership Between Academic And Student Affairs, Jacqueline Cetera, Adrienne Jensen-Doray, Katherine Furlong
Staff Scholarship
Why is this partnership and collaboration so hard? The idea of bridging the gap between academic and student affairs is not a new concept. Working to bridge the gap can help strengthen partnerships and shared responsibilities that contribute to both a student’s academic success and life outside the classroom. By attending this session, individuals will take away tangible ideas to partner and focus on academic and out of the classroom partnerships. Presenters will share findings and best practices from Bucknell University.
Tipping The Balance Towards 21st Century Skills Through Peer-To-Peer Learning: A Cross-Disciplinary Pilot Of Peer Review Software, John Mccormick, Lisa Spitz, Liv Cummins
Tipping The Balance Towards 21st Century Skills Through Peer-To-Peer Learning: A Cross-Disciplinary Pilot Of Peer Review Software, John Mccormick, Lisa Spitz, Liv Cummins
Staff Scholarship
There is growing recognition that many college students enter the workplace lacking “21st Century Skills” such as critical thinking, collaboration and communication. Peer-to-peer feedback provides a large number of benefits, including these “lifelong learning” skills valued by industry. Peer review, however, poses many challenges: for instructors; these include management of the process and poor quality of peer feedback; and for students, socioemotional barriers. Key socioemotional challenges are learners’ lack of trust in the process, in their peers, and in themselves as reviewers. This paper describes a pilot of a web-based peer review software called “Peergrade”, which was found highly effective …

Exploring Parents' Experiences Of Postsecondary Education For Their Children With Disabilities, Cara G. Streit
Exploring Parents' Experiences Of Postsecondary Education For Their Children With Disabilities, Cara G. Streit
Staff Scholarship
This study explored the expectations and experiences of parents whose adult children graduated from a comprehensive college-based postsecondary education program for students with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Seventeen parents of graduates from the Lesley University Threshold Program in Cambridge, MA were interviewed in the style of narrative inquiry. Subjects were asked to describe their expectations for their sons’ and daughters’ futures as they grew up, the role of a college program in their children’s development and in the evolution of their own expectations, their hopes and concerns for the future, and their opinions of college inclusion and how greater inclusion …
Mix And Match: Promoting Interdisciplinary Teaching, Learning, And Community Through Classroom-Level Partnerships, Natalie J.K. Baloy, Joanne A. Fox, Allen Sens
Mix And Match: Promoting Interdisciplinary Teaching, Learning, And Community Through Classroom-Level Partnerships, Natalie J.K. Baloy, Joanne A. Fox, Allen Sens

Developed at the University of British Columbia (UBC), UBC Mix creates interdisciplinary learning experiences for students by developing partnerships between existing courses, and between existing courses and other learning opportunities. UBC Mix connects faculty members interested in making their courses more interdisciplinary, and facilitates the creation of shared learning activities that "mix” students together. The UBC Mix project provides a model for facilitating interdisciplinary teaching and learning within existing courses and programs at colleges and universities.
Visualizing Interaction: Pilot Investigation Of A Discourse Analytics Tool For Online Discussion, John Mccormick
Visualizing Interaction: Pilot Investigation Of A Discourse Analytics Tool For Online Discussion, John Mccormick
Staff Scholarship
Discussion boards are perhaps the most commonly used collaboration tool in online courses. However, native discussion tools in learning management systems are limited in their ability to show interaction patterns among learners. Tools that provide more robust visual representations of discussions can improve instructors’ understanding of how students are interacting and, as a result, their ability to intervene when identifying suboptimal interaction patterns. This paper presents an exploratory investigation of one such tool, Social Networks Adapting Pedagogical Practice (SNAPP), examining its potential to help faculty understand and react to discussion patterns. Emerging learning analytics tools such as SNAPP can enhance …

Analyzing Online Asynchronous Discussions With A Visual Data Analytic Tool (Snapp), John Mccormick, Heather Tillberg-Webb

In the “age of globalization,” construction of effective learning environments takes into account the development of a community of inquiry and incorporates visual tools for quick evaluation of the vibrancy of the learning environment. Discussion forums are an essential tool for co-construction of knowledge in a community of practice (Lave and Wenger, 1991) and for supporting a Community of Inquiry model (Garrison et al, 2003). For the purposes this session, effective online discussions are communications that build community and take place in forums designed for threaded, text-based interaction that help learners:
- Attain course learning outcomes
- Understand course content through collaborative …
