This senior thesis is an autoethnographic study in which I retell and analyze my experiences engaging in student advocacy with other students in the College of Education (COE) at Eastern Michigan University (EMU). The purpose of this study was to better understand how certified volunteer dog therapy handlers can be integrated into special education settings. Although the pet therapy discourse confirms the overall impact dog therapy has on youth’s psychological health (e.g., Groenewoud et al., 2023), research that could elucidate how volunteer handlers modify the way they have their dogs interact with special education populations is a present-day need that has otherwise not appeared in the literature. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a common strategy that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use to help individuals better communicate. AAC is used to assist or replace verbal communication. This strategy can include pointing at pictures, having a device that speaks typed words, or using gestures such as sign language. AAC is commonly used to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder with communication. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disability that impacts social communication and interaction. Individuals with ASD also commonly have restrictive or repetitive behaviors. This project examines how a service-learning project helped future English language (EL) teachers grow. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) students planned and implemented an afterschool program to support young English learners at Estabrook Elementary. Using Piaget's theory of constructivism, this hands-on, real-world learning opportunity allowed EMU students to construct their own understanding and reflect on the experience. TESOL students first developed an after school EL program and put into practice their own lessons. Then, through reflection journals and critical discussions, students used metacognitive strategies to strengthen their expertise. As the ‘students turned teachers’ reflected on their learning, …

In a changing health care industry, it is imperative that different healthcare professionals collaborate to address the state of the patient. Respiratory therapists (RTs) and speech-language pathologists {SLPs) frequently work with the same general patient population in the healthcare setting; however, while RTs typically provide emergency interventions, SLPs work with the patient in the rehabilitative domain. Each profession has a unique understanding of the patient and may encounter an overlap in responsibilities for performing a particular task, including management of tracheostomy tubes and prevention of aspiration pneumonias. There is a significant lack of time spent writing with students in the primary grades, namely writing informationally. By using research done by experts in the fields of writing and literature in the elementary grades I have created lessons that integrate informational writing into the daily lessons in math, science, and social studies in first, third, and fifth grades. These lessons are individual, pair, and small group plans that can be completed in just one day or a few days where students are engaging with the content in a different way.

Through a comparative analysis of Eastern Michigan University and Oxford-Brookes University, it has been determined that despite being similar in size and reputability, student organizations look significantly different. The researcher determined a strong first step in discussing why the two universities have such differing approaches to student involvement would be to investigate the value found in extra-curricular participation for students that occur in both countries. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a condition which deteriorates the brain and results in a form of dementia. Its the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. and its symptoms have significant impact on both individual with AD and their caregivers. Family members are often confused and overwhelmed with an AD diagnosis. This thesis incorporates a comprehensive literature review that addresses four significant areas of need for individuals with AD: Feeding, communication, behavioral, and activities of daily life. The booklet highlight the importance of family education as they navigate the unfamiliar road of AD.

It is important for children to have effective socialization, no matter what type of disability they may have when it comes to communication. Friendship and play opportunities with others usually provide cognitive learning opportunities as well as social learning opportunities. For most children, school is a key setting for them to engage in friendships and develop social interactions. Significant differences in brain activation patterns exist between readers with and without dyslexia (Shaywitz, 1998). One possible area of difference involves font style that has led to the development of specific fonts to help individuals with dyslexia. College institutions often emphasize the importance of service learning for their students. After research revealed a lack of volunteer opportunities for college aged individuals with disabilities, a pilot program was developed to examine the benefits of service for this population, as well as their peers without disabilities. The project involved college undergraduates and young adults with an intellectual or developmental disability. After a weeklong service trip together, benefits were discussed and evaluated. Benefits to the participants with disabilities included pride, skill development and generalization, empowerment, and increases in social interaction. In this study, the researcher aims to present qualitative data obtained from semi-structured interviews that provide insight into the accessibility of high school student leadership organizations to students with disabilities. Using Daily Behavior Report Cards As Intervention For Primary School Students With Adhd, Kristina Schaefer

This study is a secondary analysis of the Daily Behavior Report Card (DBRC), for three primary school aged children diagnosed with ADHD. These children are characterized as having difficulty sustaining attention at school and play, as well as exhibiting inappropriately high levels of hyperactivity-impulsivity. The DBRC data were collected over an eight week period and chartered similar to a single system design for each student. Results showed steady improvement for some, but not all three students.
