Relational Aggression In Adolescent Girls: Developing Self-Esteem For The Target Girl, Lisa Suzanne Gulch Dec 2005

Relational Aggression In Adolescent Girls: Developing Self-Esteem For The Target Girl, Lisa Suzanne Gulch

Masters Theses

Relational aggression (RA) is rampant in our schools, especially in middle schools across America. The name-calling, rumors, exclusion, eye-rolling, and whispers work to undermine relationships between and amongst girls. Because RA is covert in nature, the behavior goes mostly unnoticed by the adults in these girl’s lives. Society conditions girls, from a very young age, to respond to aggressive behaviors by not being aggressive back; girls are supposed to be nice. The target of relational aggression is especially hurt by this behavior. She generally suffers from low self esteem and poor social skills, and when put up against a clique, …

The Effects Of Acute Exercise Of Plasma Volume Expansion In Men – Variations Of The Intensity/Duration Relationship, Christopher Matthew Gregory Dec 2005

The Effects Of Acute Exercise Of Plasma Volume Expansion In Men – Variations Of The Intensity/Duration Relationship, Christopher Matthew Gregory

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the exercise variables of intensity and duration in relation to PV expansion during an acute bout of exercise, when the total amount of work performed was kept constant. Six male subjects completed a maximal graded exercise test and three two-day experimental trials. During the experimental trials, each subject performed one of three exercise protocols on a cycle ergometer: 50% VO2peak (60 minutes), 65% VO2peak (45 minutes), and 80% VO2peak (30 minutes). Measurements of hematocrit, hemoglobin, and serum albumin and total protein concentrations were obtained before exercise (BASE), immediately post-exercise …

How Do You Rate Those Instructors? The Validity Of Student Evaluations Of Higher Education Instructors, Kristy Ann Carter Ouallal-Mcriffey Dec 2005

How Do You Rate Those Instructors? The Validity Of Student Evaluations Of Higher Education Instructors, Kristy Ann Carter Ouallal-Mcriffey

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of students’ evaluation of higher education instructors. Many questions and issues arise concerning students’ evaluation of higher education instructors. It is questionable whether a student can provide an unbiased evaluation of a higher education instructor. Because there are varying opinions on what constitutes a good or even an effective instructor, it makes it hard to determine just what student evaluations measure. If factors such as the personal feelings toward the instructor are used to determine the score on an evaluation, then this can’t possibly measure the instructors’ ability to teach. …

Classroom Management In Music Ensembles: Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived Classroom Management Skills And Performance Achievement, Jeffrey David Costello

Masters Theses

As literature repeatedly has stated that classroom management is a great area of concern for teachers, the present study was conducted in an attempt to determine whether a relationship exists between classroom management skills and performance achievement among directors of music ensembles in western Michigan. Subjects (n=28), selected from Michigan School Vocal Music Association’s District Ten, responded to a mail survey providing answers to various questions pertaining to their classroom management skills and education experience. Also volunteered by the participants were the District Festival ratings received by their ensembles during the past three years. These ratings served as the measure …

The Effect Of Glycemic Indices And Timing Of Meal On Exercise To Fatigue, Amy Morrison Gyorkos Aug 2005

The Effect Of Glycemic Indices And Timing Of Meal On Exercise To Fatigue, Amy Morrison Gyorkos

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the influence of pre-carbohydrate feedings prior to exercise to fatigue. Five individuals performed a peak bike test and four experimental trials, separated by 7 days. Upon arrival, subjects ingested 1g of carbohydrates (CHO) for every kilogram of body weight (BW) of a high glycemic index meal (HGI) or a low glycemic index meal (LGI) prior to exercise to fatigue. Subjects waited 30- or 60-minutes following each test meal, totaling four experimental trials. The exercise regiment was consistent following each meal; 90 minutes cycling at 70% peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak …

Pulmonary data were collected every minute using an automated breath-by-breath system and compared between the first and last ten minutes of each trial. The data showed a significant increase was seen in RE from …

The Differential Effects Of Performance-Contingent, Completion-Contingent, And No Reward Conditions On Math Performance, Voluntary Task Participation, And Self-Reported Interest In Math, Renee Oliver Aug 2005

The Differential Effects Of Performance-Contingent, Completion-Contingent, And No Reward Conditions On Math Performance, Voluntary Task Participation, And Self-Reported Interest In Math, Renee Oliver

Masters Theses

Researchers have repeatedly found that performance-contingent and task-contingent rewards can be used to increase both math accuracy and completion rates. However, researchers have not directly compared the differential effects of these two types of reward contingencies. Although researchers have examined the differential effects of performance-contingent and task-contingent rewards on intrinsic motivation to perform an activity, this research has consistently focused on the dependent measures of self-reported interest and free-choice participation. To this point, researchers have not thoroughly investigated the differential effects of performance- and task completion-contingent rewards on academic accuracy when these contingencies are in place and after teachers remove …

Exploring Zero Tolerance School Policies And Their Effects On African American Males: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Jacqueline Renee Noble-Dial Aug 2005

Exploring Zero Tolerance School Policies And Their Effects On African American Males: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Jacqueline Renee Noble-Dial

Masters Theses

My interest in schools’ zero tolerance policies as a method of discipline arose out of the manner in which my son’s behavior was singled out as troubling to his teacher. In addition, the fact that my daughter, despite her proclivity to socialize during classes has never been labeled by any of her teachers as troubling aroused my parental curiosity. I noted how teachers related differently to my son than they did to my daughter and discovered through my interest in this subject that African American males are being displaced from the educational system and routed to alternative schools or directly …

The Learning Styles Of Health And Physical Education Students Using The Capsol Style Of Learning Assessment, Erin D. Palpant

Masters Theses

Students in a classroom all receive the information the same way, however, those students most likely learn and process information quite differently. Therefore the format in which it is received can make a large impact on the effectiveness of the instruction. The purpose of this study was to determine the learning styles of health and physical education students using the CAPSOL Styles of Learning Assessment. One hundred ten undergraduate PE students in the college of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) from Western Michigan University participated in this study during February 2005.

Frequencies and percentages were figured for the students …

Psychosocial Theories Of Development: Socializing Future Educators In Modernity, Jennifer Jill Niedzielski Jun 2005

Psychosocial Theories Of Development: Socializing Future Educators In Modernity, Jennifer Jill Niedzielski

Masters Theses

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the implicit curriculum of high-profile theories of identity and moral development as commonly found in collegiate-level educational psychology texts. My primary concern is the manner in which Erik Erikson's and Lawrence Kohlberg's theories of development implicitly convey modernistic frames of mind of the autonomous individual at a level that goes unnoticed. The manner in which the implicit curriculum socializes future educators to adopt the autonomous individual frame of mind is problematic for our natural world.

The aims of this paper are significant because they illuminate the notion of the autonomous individual as …

Given the importance of mentoring, this study will explore mentor relationships in academic settings (Waldeck, Orrego, Plax, & Kearney, 1997). Participants were both undergraduate and graduate students with and without mentors. The goal of this thesis study was to understand whether students of color with formal mentors become more successful than similar students who do not have mentor relationships. This research also explored how students who lack formal mentors get important information. In addition, this study explored many differences between men and women of color who seek or utilize mentoring relationships. Mentor and mentee characteristics, students of color in formal …

Safer Schools: Promoting Safe Play On School Playground Equipment, Kimberly Elaine Seckinger Jun 2005

Safer Schools: Promoting Safe Play On School Playground Equipment, Kimberly Elaine Seckinger

Masters Theses

Each year, over 200,000 people receive emergency room care for injuries sustained on recreational equipment, and a vast majority of these injuries involve children under the age of 15 who have been hurt on school playground equipment. To date, a single empirical study has been conducted applying behavioral technology to decrease children's risky behavior on playground equipment (Heck, Collins, & Peterson, 2001 ), and showed reductions in risk-taking behavior when programmed consequences were in place. The purposes of the current investigation were to replicate and extend previous research though a component analysis of an injury prevention package designed to decrease …

This descriptive study focused on assistive technology (AT) service provider exploration of the Student, Environment, Tasks, Tools (SETT) Framework during assessment and decision-making. Review of the literature is suggestive that employment of an effective model to structure team assessment, such as the SETT Framework, can prevent the phenomenon of device abandonment. Participants used for this study were identified as AT service providers through their participation in Tennessee sponsored training opportunities. All participants were involved in the provision of AT services in public school settings. Completion of an on-line survey designed to assess SETT Framework exploration was required of all participants. …
